They had their chance when MLB was on strike back in 94 and NBA had their lockout soon after. But no Bettman had to follow suit instead of taking advantage of an empty sports schedule.

There losing there core audience now bit by bit because product is so bad and watered down now with all the rule changes to take fighting/hitting out of the sport...I was never much of a hockey viewer but now with all the hitting gone its unwatchable...

Yep that's Bettman. Instead of letting the fans understand the game he changed it to what he thought would make them understand it better. Plus rapid expansion watered the league down even more. How does the NHL have more teams than the NBA and MLB

Its not really bettmans fault hes at the mercy of the broadcasters and sponsors who are telling him to get these things out of the game...its never gonna be higher than what it is in the pecking order because its not an american game dominated by americans...same as soccer.

Probably “only” paid a few hundred million since NHL has been nonexistent on ESPN except for one 3 minute Barry Melrose segment on the 1AM Sportscenter
I’m sure NHL wanted back in on the ESPN platforms

It’s only half the package. But ESPN will now have to actually cover the league

Comcast NBC isn’t happy they now lost exclusive rights. But they ultimately will probably re-up cause FOX doesn’t look like they gonna drop money

Thing is, NHL would benefit with ESPN+ and Peacock for next several years Fox ain’t on that streaming game

Maybe FOX/FS1 better fit the cable subs. Since NBCSN is done and its been implied that games will be on USA Network..

ESPN + is going to be the primary streaming platform is looks like based on the ESPN deal from what I’m reading. I think it just comes down to whether or not NBC wants to keep NHL or not basically so we will see. Most think NBC is sticking around, I’m just not sure based on the moves they have made.

I know, ESPN + getting streaming rights a few years back was a sign NHL wanted to do business with ESPN again
