I bet 49ers fans wish they still had Wilks
Tough to say a lot of the defense is injured right now.
What I didn't learn is whether San Fran is bad or not. Very weird game, defense was leaky and the offense never looked right. Especially in the second half.
Let me be objective and speak on the 49ers situation.
Brock Purdy is not the problem in a weird way he has been a blessing and a curse at the same time. Through a series of events he went from Mr Irrelevant to a very good starter. That hasn't changed. Has he been perfect? Of course not. But he has proven that he can move the ball up and down the field without the 'Avengers' and objectively has put the team in a position to win. He is the perfect West Coast style QB. Strong enough arm to make all the throws, quick release, generally accurate and evasive as hell. Killer mentality (which is also his biggest weakness).
Here's the problem. Kyle Shanahan's and John Lynch's hubris. Because of the success of the past 3 years they forgot the basics and focused too much on building a superteam and not a 'super' team if that makes any sense. I'm only going to go over the bad moves of this and last offseason which led down this path.
Have Christian McCaffrey a raise for no reason.
Waited until close to the season to re-sign Brandon Aiyuk letting him get fat and out of shape in the process. Only really being 2 million dollars a year apart at the end of the day.
Doing the same thing with Trent Williams HOF left tackle. Coming back bloated and out of shape.
Signing Javon Hargrave to a massive contract. He was a decent pass rusher but of little consequence otherwise. Out for the season now.
Not signing a veteran kicker after Robbie Goild retires
Wasted a 2023 pick drafting a kicker in the 3rd. A kicker who can't make field goals under pressure. Could have been a decent O-line man with that pick.
Wasted a 2024 4th rounder on a RB who is useless (could have been Center or Tackle positions of need) Despite drafting bust RBs in the 3rd and 4th round 3 times before.
We have an aging Center who had 9 career starts prior to 2023. Could have upgraded at a nominal cost in FA. We extend him instead which is fine for insurance but he should not be starting.
Ignoring special teams which has been an issue for Kyle's entire tenure. The Special teams coach should have been fired last but now we keep him. The 49ers are objectively the worst special teams unit in the league.
Wanna know why Kansas City wins Superbowls because Patrick Mahomes really needed WR help and the last draft was loaded at wide receiver. You know what KC did they drafted a tackle.
