and with shorter seasons + nonguaranteed, incentive based paychecks the players often aren't going to hold themselves out unless they have to

In the NBA its 82 games. Trainer says "You might be able to play, depends how you feel". You go out there for a quarter say "I can't keep going". Thats it.

NFL that whole equation is much more convoluted.
