The ending is meant to be ambiguous, but I was listening to a podcast with the creative team
The head writer believed Cassie pushed the button and didn't choose to stay in the red forrest, but one of the other writers felt she didn't. I'm on the side she didn't choose the red forrest, and pushed the button. They had been through so much at the point to stop there
I seen that, which is what made me re-analyze it
remember when the witness was in her head at the hotel and took the form of Aaron? Then said something like "this is what you want in your red forest" and turned into Cole? Cole is who she loves, so there would be no Aaron there.
After everything is supposedly reset, they replay the very first scene where Cole shows up in Cassie's car, with Cole not there. In the first episode, as she's walking to her car, she's on the phone with Aaron and talking all lovey dovey and dirty to him as the camera cuts back and forth between them. In the reset shot though, she's on the phone with someone unseen and she's saying real basic shyt with nothing in her tone to say it's Aaron. I don't think she's on the phone with Aaron at all because he has no place in her red forest.
Might be a stretch, but with the level of detail put in throughout the show, I believe they had to change that phone conversation for a reason
