Been a great fall camp thus far, but wanted to focus on five guys that I feel has been especially impactful as we reach the 1/3rd mark of this important time of the year.
1) Paris Johnson---been a back and forth battle with him an NPF for "best offensive lineman" this fall camp--but Paris has been simply outstanding. Just dominating when he is there and finishing plays all the way to the whistle. Been especially helpful for first year center Harry Miller to be flanked by Johnson and Munford--as that makes his life infinitely easier to have two dependable guys right beside him. The entire offensive line has been a bright spot this fall, but none have shown brighter than Paris.
2) Denzel Burke---freshman corner from Arizona has been one of my favorite guys to watch this fall. They've thrown him right into the mix and have him going against the top WR corps in the country and he is more than holding his own. But what sets him apart in my opinion is his willingness to stick his nose right in there and make a tackle--as he likes the physical part of the game as much as coverage. Going to be a good one.
3) JT Tuimoloau---Has really been making improvement with each passing day. Cleary was finding his way early on, but now its pretty evident that OSU is just putting him in spots where he can let his athleticism come through. Think Andy Katzenmoyer his freshman year(I know, different position) but basically "see ball---get ball". JT is a GREAT kid and really wants to be coached up. Hard to hype up the #1 player in the country any more than he has been----but he will be immediate impact---this year.
4) Haskell Garrett----Another guy who has really stepped up and let by example this fall camp. Going up against that massive offensive line every day and more than holding his own. Has gotten noticeably quicker than last year and kept his strength---so really providing a key answer for Ohio State on the interior of the defensive line. Will be tested early in the season, but looks like a rock inside the line. Got some AA notice last year---will get more this one.
5) Craig Young----Just totally changes the complexion of the defense when you have a guy like this roaming around back there. I don't care what position you call it---but having a 6'3 225 lb guy that runs a 10,5 100M back there is scary---and OSU is finding all sorts of innovative ways of featuring him. Opposing defenses are going to have to account for him as he is going to be lined up all over--and you never know when he is going to deliver that "big play" that great defenses thrive off of creating.
Camp making it feel slower now. Summer flew by.Season needs to hurry up
Spoke to a few solid sources and got some good stuff on the team thus far through camp:
- While everyone feels good about the entire QB room, all of the people I spoke to felt pretty confident that CJ Stroud is “THE GUY” for the Buckeyes and they think he’s going to have a big year
- Miyan Williams is positioned to get the bulk of the reps. Yes, Master Teague will have a role. Yes, Trey Henderson will command touches. But Miyan looks like the dude to tote the rock.
- Right now they are just trying to find their best five on the OL. They didn’t love what they saw at the beginning of camp which spurred the thought of the Dawand to RT move but things are starting to trend in the right direction.
- Even if Dawand Jones doesn’t start there is a plan and package to get him involved. They’d use him almost as a jumbo tight end and do some creative things there.
- I am told that if the line ends up as NPF-Thayer-Miller-Paris-Dawand that there may be some very unhappy campers and the portal could see some action. Buckeyes have to get the best five out there, though. It stinks to lose good talent but I’m told a few guys may be frustrated that they are getting log jammed.
- I am also told the defensive line has looked VERY good. Specifically Zach Harrison and Jack Sawyer are two that I am told have stood out. Also have been told that JT Tuimoloau has been very good but needs to become more of a technician to reach his potential. Jack is ahead of JT right now because of his
- Told things are not settled at linebacker and it’s definitely an area the coaches feel need to be sorted out the next couple of weeks
- At defensive back everyone feels Sevyn Banks is penciled in for the lead spot despite suffering a minor injury setback. Cam Brown is close and the coaches are excited to see what he can do. If Lejond Cavazos can ever stay healthy and on the field there is a lot of confidence he can be a star.
- At safety Latham Ransom and Josh Proctor appear to be the starters. Cam Martinez is a guy that has impressed people as well.
- Demario McCall continues to get rave reviews. He might get a look as a nickel back.
"Team looking very sharp for this early in camp. Here my observations and thoughts...
1) Cam Brown looks almost all the way back to me. Very sharp and crisp and seemingly moving without any residual slowing from his injury. Need him to have a big year, and I think he is poised to deliver that for us. One of the pleasant surprises of camp to me.
2) Marvin Harrison, Jr just keeps getting better. Has great chemistry with McCord --but makes ALL the QB's look good. Such a precise route runner--but has the top end speed to take it all the way(like he has done several times recently). Just SO many great WR's here---but he is as good as any of them--and only a frosh...Oh my...
3) Jeremy Ruckert is more of a flex WR then he is a tight end IMHO. They really love his pass catching ability and his versatility. And when you have tight ends that can catch and block--it gives you a lot of options----especially if you want to run tempo.
4) I know you've heard a lot of good things about Mike Hall--but wanted to chime in with another one here. I just LOVE what this guy brings to the table. Strong, quick and smart---its a full house on the defensive line, but I just don't know how he doesn't take reps from someone. Super disruptive and fun to watch.
5) Julian Fleming is another guy who has shined brightly this fall. People have no idea how injured he was last season----but we might have only seen 75% of what he can do. Fully healthy now and just making guys pay out on the field. Going to put up some big numbers this year.....watch....
6) Kerry Coombs is officially in the "coordinating and walking around" portion of his career now. Barnes is the hands on guy coaching the defensive backs for better or worse. Will take some adjustment for Kerry as he loves being in the trenches---but they are asking him to be more "10,000 feet" than on the ground. Will see how that works out for him and for Ohio State.....
Now moving off Sonny Styles being a slight lean to ND.
Going pretty strongly on Sonny with Ohio State as the clear leader. Al Washington made a move. Coombs also working it.
Love my source on this.
Think the booth. He not gonna like it up thereDid they state that Coombs is going to be in the booth or on the field this season? It's going to be weird not see him getting amped up after a big defensive play.
Yikes..My brother got tickets to the Oregon game, but my wife’s friend got a new boyfriend and wanted to finally have a couple’s trip and it’s that weekend.
So now looks like the game I’ll go to is either Tulsa or Akron.
Better tell wifey that you will not be physically, mentally or emotionally available from 12 to 3:30 on that Saturday. Can’t have those ducks shytting in our house. My brother got tickets to the Oregon game, but my wife’s friend got a new boyfriend and wanted to finally have a couple’s trip and it’s that weekend.
