"Last week I thought the mid-week efforts by the team were a little sloppy to be honest. Guys seemed to be hitting a little bit of the emotional wall and it was showing in the practices that were hit and miss in terms of consistency and focus.
I know that Coach Day was not thrilled about that and really got after the guys to go out and have a great scrimmage---and I think that is exactly what they did.
Always huge when you can get practice in like that and not have any major injuries--and make no mistake--this was a violent scrimmage.
Six scrimmage winners?
1) Paris Johnson---graded out a champion for the scrimmage. Has been amazing all fall camp but really stepped it up and took it to the next level. Really becoming a go-to guy for the Buckeyes and going to leave here a very rich man(in the NFL) and with a stellar college career to look back on.
2) Lejond Cavazos---I thought he and Bryson Shaw were both excellent in the scrimmage and throughout this entire process. Lejond may be the most improved guy on the football team in terms of his focus and dedication to his craft(which was a little lacking in the past.) Poised for a big season and at a key position of need for the Buckeyes.
3) Nick Petit-Frere---Has made a seamless transition to left tackle and by doing so has insured that the OSU offense will be next level good. Allows Munford to slide to guard---gets Dawand on the field---WIN WIN WIN. Graded a champion and may be the best player on a star studded OSU team at the present time.
4) Trey Henderson---Thought Miyan was excellent as well---but Trey graded out a champion on the strength of his assignment sound(and turnover free) football. Just so excited to see him do some things to opposing defenses---as he is wearing the OSU defense out. Expectation are sky high for this kid---but trust me he is worth the hype. Has done an excellent job and is very advanced in pass pro, and his ability to “scan” and pick off blitzing corners and outside LBers has been a sight to behold. Lottery pick in the NFL Draft worthy…
5) CJ Stroud----Just doing all the things you want out of your QB. Being very responsible and judicious with his approach to the game and taking care of his business. Just love his approach to the game on and off the field. I know Day is comfortable naming him "the guy" now because he IS "the guy". The other two QB's are fine, but right now CJ is next level. Could he win the Heisman? Wouldn't bet against him
6) Harry Miller---I know I've mentioned three guys on the Oline---but wanted to save the best for last. Harry was outstanding this weekend--made every call correctly and delivered the ball back to the QB in perfect form. So happy for him as he is a guy that will feed off success. Had a very very good scrimmage---graded out a champion and might have shined the brightest in a room full of talented kids.....
Didn't want to leave without the obligatory Quinn Ewers update....this week will start up a build to the Minnesota game and the indoctrination of Quinn Ewers will begin.....he did mostly individual and scripted throwing today but they will ramp it up for him as the next days approach....
Quinn has come in with the attitude of "I want to compete and I want to win playing time", so its going to be a huge challenge for Day just to give all three QB's backing up Stroud reps.....
he has told them all to be ready to play against Minnesota---so its a race for that second spot...
will have more as it develops....."
Henderson that’s my running back .Monday practice update:
I think we may use Tre like JK his freshman year. Limited carries the first few half of the season to not get him burned out, but unleash him during the end of the season into the playoffs. JK had that big first game but then he split much of the rest of the season with Mike. He reminds me so much of Saquon.Henderson that’s my running back .
CJ in New York
as @Illeye buckmatic alway say “ we stay winning “
- TreVeyon Henderson has made a move over the last week. I am hearing Tony Alford feels very confident in his running back room this year and I expect to see all of Henderson, Teague, and Williams on the field during meaningful time. Evan Pryor and Marcus Crowley have been doing everything they’ve been asked to and more but there’s only so many snaps. But all that said, I am told it is going to be really hard to keep Henderson off the field as he’s just a special talent and it’s clicking for him more and more with every practice. The same person who told me that JK Dobbins was going to play a lot of football as a freshman is the same person singing Henderson’s praises as loud as he can.
- I avoid the receiver room updates often because Olave and Wilson are so solid, but I am told we are getting closer to putting Smith-Njigba in their category. Just a master of his craft and going to be such a perfect fit in that slot receiver position this year. While people are talking up the three freshmen, I am told that Julian Fleming is having as good of a camp as anyone and is going to play a lot this year. Hold your horses on Egbuka or Harrison passing over him.
- Cade Stover is a dude. Catches it “good enough” and is the best blocker in the room. Going to be the perfect TE2 to Ruckert’s TE1. Having a great camp. Not sure how much he plays but the staff really loves walk-on tight end Mitch Rossi too, for whatever that is worth.
- The offensive line is still being sorted out. Thayer Munford sitting with some load management/precautionary stuff allowed some other guys to mix in and they have impressed. This is a DEEP group and guys like Matt Jones start at 99% of programs in America. Matt is still fighting hard for that LG spot (if Thayer stays at LT) with Dawand Jones also fighting to crack the line up (as the RT with Thayer to LG and NPF to LT). I am told there are no concerns with Petit-Frere playing the left side if that’s how it shakes out—he has looked pretty good there thus far.
- Linebacker is still being figured out. I wouldn’t call it concerning but I think they’d really like to solidify what that looks like. The good news is a reason for that is they like a lot of guys they have. Cody Simon and Tommy Eichenberg WILL be stars here whether that is this year or beyond. The veterans are doing their job and getting Dallas Gant close to full-go has only made determining the starting job harder. Palaie Gaoteote likely won’t start but having him get reps and provide veteran presence is big for the group. The staff is very frustrated the waiver with the NCAA is taking so long.
- Growing confidence in the defense overall. The players and staff are cautiously optimistic they are going to surprise a lot of people this year. A big reason for that is the emergence of the defensive backs. Everyone is healthy and, on the field, which was a huge first step. If they stay healthy the feeling is Brown and Banks are legitimate. Lejond Cavazos is surging and has played well of late at corner. At safety and bullet, they feel good with the guys they have and the versatility to be able to provide different looks. Still a big question mark until the games start is if Josh Proctor can be the eraser like Jordan Fuller was. Angles and tackling are always the focus with him as the natural ability to make plays is there for sure.
- Looks like Jesse Mirco is inching closer to being “the guy” for sure at punter. Ruggles and Seibert are still in a battle for the kicking job. One source seems to be leaning more towards Ruggles as he’s been a bit more consistent right now, although Seibert has the bigger leg. That one should continue through this week.
3 things certain in life. Death, Taxes, and Henderson being the best back in football. From Glietman:
The pancake man . Best to ever do it.
And he carried the tradition to STL. I remember after the male sheep NFL team won the Super Bowl I went to the parade and GOATlando was right in front of me on a float and I yelled out go Bucks to him and he heard and gave theThe pancake man . Best to ever do it.
Really tough practice today. Coach Day is clearly trying to put the hammer down with the guys right now--and then he will taper it off as they get closer to the opener. But very physical, challenging session today. Lots of "best on best" and heavy blitz pickup periods---so lots of contact and collisions. Interesting to see how many elements that the OSU offense and defense has adopted from the Alabama playbook from last season. That game will have far-reaching implication for Ohio State as it will affect the look of how we motion guys, formations, screen elements, sweeps and the like. If you know what to look for--its there.
Today was dominated by the defense and there were a bunch of guys that I want to mention that stood out ...
1) Jakailin Johnson is really starting to move up the depth chart. Running with the 2's most of the day and doing a very nice job. Picking up the moniker of "Mr Turnover" as he is at the center of a lot of big plays and seems to have a nose for the ball that goes beyond his youth. Loved him in high school and thought he would be good here---but not this good this quick. Going to be a big timer. Needs to be a factor this year, and these young corners are chomping at the opportunit.
2) Jerron Cage is a guy that we talked a lot about early in camp. I will say it---I think he is the best nose guard on the team. Better than Taron. Better than Haskell. Just playing the game with such good pad level and ferocity right now. Just has to find a way onto the field with the way he is going right now. #86 is not a number you normally see on the defensive line---but start looking for it. Has a surprising good spin move that has led to a number of sacks in team settings. Does a great job denting our OL and holding the line to keep guys like Cody Simon(when he's healthy) running to make the play.
3) Javontae Jean-Baptiste is another guy that has really emerged as a vocal leader on the OSU defense. Much more active this year as the OSU staff really got on him about his "motor" in the offseason. Seems to have taken that to heart as he is going hard every play---and getting much better about back side pursuit than at any time in his career here. Had at least two sacks today and is becoming very difficult to block one on one.
4) Dallas Gant has been making the most out of some other players absences and doing a more than admirable job stepping into the fray. Started off fall camp a little behind and hobbled with a slight injury--but is now back and with a playing at a very high level. Stuck his nose in there several times and made big stops on plays that looked blocked up very well. I'm not sure he's done enough to alter the depth chart--yet--but he is coming on and making some noise for sure.
5) Teradja Mitchell--Practice sessions like this are really designed with guys like this in mind. Hard nosed, grinding type of periods with heavy contact? That's the kind of stuff that Mitchell lives for. We said that when the hitting started that certain guys would start rising to the top---well Mitchell is one of those guys. On the brink of solidifying a starting spot and doing nothing to hurt that effort. VERY physical player whose mental skills are catching up with his immense physical talent. When we are in our normal 4-2-5 look, it generally is he and Cody Simon at the Will and Mike with the 1’s. Cody Simon will be an All-American before he leaves here. I’ve see the beginning of this movie before and I know how it ended with both AJ Hawk and James Laurinaitis. He is one of “those”…
Nothing but factsMan this wait for the season to start makes it better that it comes two days early. Any other part of the season I’d hate a Thursday game. But we get to watch this game then hate watch Clemson-Georgia and Miami-Alabama with a clear conscience.
