Those shows didn't have to meet the same standards.... Would "A different world" get that same love today? Or is Whitney too light skinned ..... Is the cast of Living Single Dark Skinned enough? Hillary and Carlton would be dragged for being corny.... "That's not a real depiction of black people!" Twitter would shout.... And don't get me started on Family Matters.... Back then: Everyone rushed to support black shows and enterprises. We helped each other; That was the rule.
Today: Everyone rushes to criticize and announce why a black show isn't worthy of our support. The cast aint darkskinned enough. The protagonists professions aren't to my liking. They are too corny, or too rich, or too poor. And if its not that; then criticize the creator. Sure maybe the cast is all ADOS, All Lawyers, All middle class and genuine people, but one of the writers has a Mexican wifeor the camera crew has a 4:1 cac/black ratio
Its wild, but I have seen the most militant nikkas in the world lavish these white shows like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and The Office with praise, then shyt on EVERY BLACK SHOW SINCE THE WIRE..... Its fukking WILD.

Feel like in the 90s, Martin worked because black men tended to either be ignored or viewed almost always through a hypermasculine lens. Nowadays, we are disproportionately portrayed as side kicks, effeminate etc. It's out of whack relative to our share of the population.

Well I just watched the first episode and I didn't really like it.
To me the episode sounded like a bunch of ideas that Barris had come up with but had not gotten around to completely fleshing out so it was way too wordy for what I was expecting.
Also I have never seen Kenya act before but he is semi terrible. I would not call Rashida Jones a Viola Davis level actress but she acts rings around Barris.
It seems like he wrote this and is the stand in for the real actor who will be added later to say the lines.
