A war with Iran would last maybe 2-3 months until the military was soundly defeated. The problem comes afterwards in the "nation-building and security phase" where the military become police officers and try to restore as much normalcy as possible.

If this was like WWII, these countries would have been steamrolled and the backs of their people broken until they had no will. So let us be glad we are all civilized now.

:yeshrug: and the US can nuke the fukk out of the planet, we all know that. The problem is everyone wants to make a moral argument (see even Netanyahu's terminology here) and the argument falls apart when you start doing that. Also you're way overlooking post-WWI and post-WWII reconstruction efforts

I didn't make my point very well. What I am saying is that there was an absolute force in the wars prior to the UN forming. It was more about breaking the will of the populace than defeating an army in some regards. The US went into Iraq and Afghanistan and started nation building from the start. In WWII, they decimated the entire continent without regard for civilian life, and THEN they started rebuilding things. There is a difference I think.

For example, I remember in Iraq there would be a dude with a backpack FULL of Cash. He was sent by HQ and his job was to pay back families who had damaged property, livestock or had people wounded or killed. That was his job, to give people cash.

Can you imagine that happening in WWII?

We agree about the differences between a total war and a modern occupation, but my point is that the fact that a country can engage in total war against another country is kinda skipping over the purpose right? Saying of course we can take out iran, the problem is the postwar stage, is a bit of tautology -- we all know that, but the post-government stabilization in your favor is the point of the war in the first place

That's debatable. War can be used as an example to all other regimes in the country.

Yeah we look back in hindsight at WW2 as a "just war". It wasn't clear back then, especially before Pearl Harbor. And it was kept up through a strong, concerted deliberate propaganda campaign unlike anything today. You think Bush and Powell's little UN speeches were bad. Before every movie, in every newspaper, bonds drives everywhere and anywhere, on the radio all the time, in the comic books. Collusion between the newspapers/magazines and the executive, shutting down dissenting voices.

We like to put this gloss over WW2 as a just war in which America did everything right. But really, it was war. It was dirty, bloody, the government got huge and controlled and censored a ton of shyt. It was worst than it is today.

Also the holocaust was minor in the list of reasons the US got involved, and the Russians did most of the anti-Nazi fighting
