Like I said before. No So So Def. He doesn’t get in the room with certain people. He may have never even had a chance to link with Short. Who was ALSO a cosign. Regardless. Lil Jon doesn’t fit this conversation.
I feel like u missing my entire point because ur so close to the situation. Look. I’m not saying he didn’t bust his ass. I’m not saying he didn’t work hard. But to say the man didn’t benefit from dealing with JD for years is being disingenuous. It just is brodie. Whether they fell out or not. Just from a learning the business and networking perspective.I disagree. I met Lil Jon and his partner Searcy when i was 14 years old. I remember when he used to bring us to his parents big ass house to listen to records. That JD shyt was just to get some cash, JD wasn't actively trying help him like that.
Too Short told the story of how he linked with Lil Jon and it aint had nothing to do with So So Def. I guess you have to differentiate between Lil Jon the producer/rapper/personality and Lil Jon the A&R. He made that entire persona without JD, he was his own tour manager, producer, DJ. If you wanted to book Jon, he would answer the call, fill out the riders, collect the money etc. BME wasn't SoSoDef, he built that shyt with Searcy from nothing. His first songs weren't even mastered, he would take them straight up to the radio stations and they would play them shyts.

Racks was the snitch's song.Racks was popping before Drake and more than magic. Even if we ignore the df, he was already cosigned by Rocko and Gucci.
No one said JD “made” Lil Jon. You can’t tell me Lil Jon being on those compilation didn’t help him at all in the mid 90s. Nelly didn’t have major labels putting him on compilation . That what he mean by “co sign”I disagree. I met Lil Jon and his partner Searcy when i was 14 years old. I remember when he used to bring us to his parents big ass house to listen to records. Son Lil Jon produced My Boo. That shyt was huge. Lol.
Shoutout to Rod Terry and Carl Mo for the co-production; especially Carl, I don’t think he gets enough credit.
He’s the kinda guy who isn’t known like that but everything they touch is classic. Off top, I know he also did
“Swing My Way”, and “The Way You Move”.
Never knew Cardan wrote for him![]()
Because @Wacky D and you are downplaying Universal's role in Nelly blowing up. He got plenty of hype as the first STL rapper plus the whole midwest schtick. Universal was pushing him just like Def Jam South pushed Luda. The labels were doing their jobs.
Neither had a big star on their debuts. The biggest were UGK and Lil' Wayne (who wasn't WAYNE yet).
Didnt they go on tour 98-99? They had to right? Cause B.G. dropped bling bling in 99, and HB was in full swing by 99
I thought they had made like 100mil revenue but only saw like 20 racks or sum. I might be wrong though
but they had tremendous success and they came out in a different era.
rap was mainstream when nelly came out and he had the internet to help him. plus his was mostly bubblegum pop rap, not the dedicated street shyt Bun and Pimp Chad (RIP) were providing.
So is the story true or not?
Dmx outsold everyone on no limit.
MTV and nursey rhymes for country grammar hook was a pretty decent co sign
but he is partly right
Ok so lets give Nelly his props
Lets give luda props for incognegro
These guys didnt invent the genre though and were NOT the first hiphop acts by any means so someone did pave the way for them somehow direct cosigner or not. Nelly (along with Tpain, snap music, autotune, drake, RnB and commercial white exploitation) I can also blame for hiphops decay...... so be easy.
I'm talking big national arena tours. Cash money didn't do that until 2000 and they had to team up with ruff ryders.
No Limit did that in 1999 and they did it by themselves. Nor did they have any assistance, hype or even acknowledgement from the industry or media. All they had was a low-budget commercial.
Lol
UGK was never a big group. They were regional.
when they got a little national shine like 15 years later, it was all 100% because of cosigns.
I don't know whose lying to you mane, but them dudes were never stars.
I think it is.
With all the influence bone had on Nelly, he never shouted them out until recent years..
never had their videos on his countdowns or nothing.
Okay?
Why are you yelling m this?
Naw
Back in the day you had to blow up BEFORE you made it to MTV.
Nelly just talking for his time.
He's not talking about the OG pioneers.
