Measuring something up with reality =/= gatekeeping, nobody can gatekeep video games. People call BS because it's not congruent with their reality. I've never played a multiplayer game where half or even 30/40% of the players were female. Never seen a gaming tournament or gaming event where anywhere near half the attendees were female (they'd be lucky to get 10%). Never heard more than one at a time voice chat. Female aimed games sell poorly, ask Forespoken. Think back to all the Xbox live sessions you'd had in your life, use your own memory.

This is from people's experience. Thats the reason for the old meme of G.I.R.L. being any acronym for "Guy In Real Life" or the "There are no girls on the internet" memes. Truth is the average woman don't care for videogames and mainly buys them as gifts for their bf but will annoy the fukk out of them for playing it later. That's average experience to most people

Besides the idea that gamers gatekeep this shyt is hilarious. If anything they become thirsty from female presence in games. That's a weird ass conclusion.

It's not revenge. People gatekeep because they don't want uninformed opinions fukking up something. A lot of it stems from deciding the direction of something. Imagine if, on this board, we gave equal weight to to the direction of this board to people who just signed up yesterday and had only two posts versus someone who has been here since the beginning and logged a few thousand posts. The people who have been here longer would feel some sort of way, understandably so.

No it’s not a weird as conclusion when you realize how silly the assumptions are. There have ALWAYS been girls into nerdom, gaming and ect. But they were never really acknowledged. So to try and gatekeep or act like it’s a shock that there weren’t lil girls playing Zelda or writing Sesshoumaru fanfiction has always been ridiculous.

The issue is that nerd culture for both men and women used to be fringe and became more mainstream over time. The extent to which those who wanna gatekeep nerd culture buys into it is fukking unhealthy and wrapped up in wanting to punish or accuse people of being posers for not committing to it to the extent that they did, because they feel they were socially punished for those hobbies growing up.

There’s no justification to be a jackass towards people for having varying levels of interests in hobbies just because the OGs who were there from the start made that culture their entire identity, whereas others took casual interest in it.

For example, I was reading speculative fiction like George R.R. Martin and other fantasy authors when I was in grade school WAAAAAY before Game of Thrones ever became a show. But you won’t catch me gatekeeping that shyt for newcomers.
Firstly, because you, me and no one else has any authority to do so and secondly because I’m not that invested. It was a hobby.

And that’s where the conversation should stay. But when you got people sending female gamers insults and death threats because they are protective of some shyt that is open to the general public, I call that mental illness good sir and I suspect there are some deep rooted vengeful psychological reasons behind it.

Yep and it’s not new. Female nerds have dealt with these types of attitudes for decades to be honest. “Show me your t*ts”, “Girls don’t have hobbies” culture is a thing and always has been.

But I think it has gotten better over time. Most normal dudes now don’t really think twice about a chick hopping on a game, but u still get a few who do.

That's the problem some of these people have. These people are, yet the views of someone who is not invested is given either equal weight or even more in some discussions for this stuff. Even more, as we have seen in this thread, some are merely skeptical about the info yet people are acting as if most of the reaction is just people who hate women or something to that affect. In the end, people gatekeep mostly because they don't want uninformed opinions from people who have little stake in something.

That said, as some have reiterated over and over, they aren't surprised at the idea of women playing games, just the information being used to back this idea. They don't hate women, they just question the stats. They aren't out for revenge, they just question the stats. Their reason for questioning the stats is not rooted in revenge either. Some dudes are fukked up but the response for the most part is usually skepticism than anything else.

Edit: A good example is the Call of Duty series. I'm not invested at all. I wouldn't mind being allowed to run around on a T-Rex and shoot flaming puppies at people while screaming "Yeaaaaaaaah who's the Juggernaut bytch!". But that would be terrible for most fans of the game and if they were mad at me for wanting that, not wanting me anywhere near the decisions for the games, and just not wanting me part of their community I would understand. I literally learned recently that it has a full blown lore, something I always ignored the few times I played. I'm a terrible fan of the series yet if I acted like I deserved to be held along side the other fans, it would be insane shyt.
