I was 19 in 1995 and knew who that was though. :mjlol:

You're acting like Marley Marl didn't give RZA his first production equipment. So yeah, there was over lap between the two generations.

These kids are into the same shyt their parents were into. Hip-hop has been around 40 years. You keep comparing different genres of music (60's music and disco, new jack swing and the 70's) which don't fit here.

These kids most likely chose Kendrick because he hasn't dropped an album in 2-3 years. It's as simple as that. Like @cartierhoe pointed out Zion is familiar with older shyt. So nah, it's not what you're talking about.

Fred.
It has nothing to do with Kendrick not dropping in a few years. They have deep catalogs and these guys grew up on them.

From my perspective Kendrick was always the least popular of the 3. Drake and Cole always had a bigger and more organic connection to the people.

Also stop shaming guys born in 2000 and 2001 for not knowing about OutKast. Y’all also stay painting NBA as dumb jocks who don’t know music just to spin it. :russ:

First of if you were 19 in 1995 you old as shyt so I see why you catching feelings. You definitely should know who Marley Mal is. You dam near went to school with that nikka. Don’t get ya cross colors in a bunch but in 2019 people consume shyt extremely fast and to even think the majority of 19 year old has interest in OutKast isn’t realistic.

The point of the thread is about Kdot though which I agreed he hasn’t made young nikka friendly music in a lonnnnng time. I love the the music he makes because it’s full of substance sonically and lyrically, but not really in a lane to be in the main mix of 19 year olds.

The same group of nikkas who didn't even know who Outkast was? They don't validate shyt. Everytime I've ever heard one of those young nikkas give what they like to listen to, it's almost always whoever is on the radio at that exact time. Them nikkas don't listen to music forreal. It's like asking a female the same question
Why should they know who OutKast is? They were born in the early 2000’s. They were 5-6 years old when OutKast dropped their last album. Andre 3000 has no solo. They’re apart. They don’t do media appearances. They don’t tour. They have dropped no new music. They would probably literally know who these guys are apart more than they would know them together. :francis:

I wouldn’t expect every 19 year old to know who OutKast is that’s not realistic

I've literally never said anything about younger people not knowing who Outkast is. Or how dumb NBA players are. Not in a single post.

The fukk? :gucci:

I've said before dozens of times (again, use the Search function if you don't believe me) younger fans aren't usually familiar with artists from earlier eras because there's no over lap between this generation and the last....there was from the 80's to the 90's.

And dude I quoted was naming completely different genres of music to give people a pass for not knowing who older acts are in the same genre.

As far as the rest of your post we'll have to agree to disagree. They put them on the spot and out of the 3 Kendrick is the one with the least amount of new music. If Kendrick just dropped a new album they'd probably say Cole. I doubt they'd ever say Drake as he constantly puts out music.

There is overlap with this generation and the last. It’s just that the last generation isn’t the 90’s so they may or may not know who OutKast are off top. It’s 2019. There’s literally new rappers who see Chief Keef as one of their favorite rappers ever. Dudes like Polo G and Trippie Redd calling Tha Carter IV an inspiration.

If a 19 year old didn’t specifically go on the internet searching for music or didn’t have their old heads putting them on they may not know who OutKast are, especially as a group.

I don't mean just listening to music though or being a fan.

I mean, like I said, Marley Marl literally giving RZA his first equipment to make beats. I mean Jay being under Kane. shyt like that.

Where older artists are either the reason the new guy is in the game, or is seen as a mentor. Mobb Deep doing songs with Rakim. Outkast doing music with Slick Rick, etc.

There is virtually none of that in 2019. Not to the extent of the 80's and 90's anyway.

And :manny: I don't even know what you're talking about with the Outkast stuff breh. I never argued 19 year olds should know who Outkast is. As a matter of fact, in that King Guap thread (19 year old listening to older rap) I was calling out people asking why or how he didn't know who random ass old rappers were.

Drake is the biggest rap artist out, he's the Raptors team ambassador, he's around the NBA and NBA culture all the time
J. Cole is a hooper, and he's in with the young crowd and college kids since he came out... a video just dropped with bruh getting buckets in a pickup game with NBA players
Kendrick has ties to a few players, but that's it, he isn't some superfan/groupie like Drake, he comes off as unathletic and short, and the other 2's music clearly resonates more with NBA players

:manny:

This isn't surprising in the least

full
So was this thread made for discussion or as an echo chamber for nikkas who don't like Kendrick?

Brolic... Alcoholics
So Kendrick has to be played and forced on people nonstop for anyone to admit he's any good, simply because he's in the moment...gotcha :sas2:

I think that's just a sign of the times. I also think that's a reason why Drake is always so active. You gotta stay in the public's view or else they will forget about you.

GKMC was his most accessible project, came out late 2012 and bled into 2013, i was in like 7th-8th grade during that time and Kendrick was HUGE to everyone

TPAB was too different for mainstream listeners, it had acclaim and real fans loved it but the casuals ain’t rock with it

Edit: and Cole ain’t become a phenom til FHD came out, EVERYONE hopped on that bandwagon and he’s been going strong since
How was GKMC more accessible than DAMN?

The entirety of 'DAMN' was on the hot 100 on top of having a #1 single and another top 10
