"More people watch 7-game series" is the kinda obvious trend that distorts the line a little bit.

I'm surprised how little draw Boston seems to have. I was under the impression they had a big fanbase and that NBA fans were generally "interested" in them, but whether Boston was playing or not seems to make no difference in the ratings.

And MJ was definitely a big draw, but are people ignoring that '94, '95, '97, and '99 are all pretty much the same rating? Obviously ratings were a lot higher in the pre-internet, pre-mass cable era. The fact that that shytty Knicks vs. Pacers series in '99 has nearly double the ratings of a far more interesting Celtics vs. Pistons series in '08 shows how quickly ratings cratered after 400-channel options and the tech boom hit. It's not all Jordan effect (though MJ's series were still far better than the other ones nearby).

Meh, most of their series are in the teens which is about right

As a team they have one of the largest fanbases but they're probably like 4th in the league overall. Definitely not bigger than the Lakers and probably not bigger than the Bulls or Knicks either, just more consistently relevant. And they haven't really had a household superstar draw since Bird

As expected the Jordan era was a ratings and viewership machine as was the early heatles era Lebron. Aside from those two eras the league is generally around 5-8 million range

Looks like people didnt give a fukk about the ECF in 2003-2004 as the numbers were awful.

Those covid years were a killer. Easy to see why the NBA stays away from the summer months as the conference finals in 2020 and 2021 were two of the worse numbers they have gotten.

Would love to see how this compares to the WCF.

I wonder what kind of massive ratings the
ECFs in the early 90s(1990-1993 ) got.

1990 pistons/bulls
1991 pistons/bulls
1992 cavs/bulls
1993 Knicks/bulls

These ECFs in the mid-late 1980s probably got high ratings too. By the mid 1980s, all NBA playoff conference final games were broadcasted nationally and were not on tape delay anymore.

1985 Celtics/76ers
1986 Celtics/bucks
1987 Celtics/pistons ECF
1988 Celtics/pistons ECF
1989 bulls/pistons

No surprise NBC let that go when the numbers dipped in the early 2000s.

Now they want back in for some reason (I guess it's the streaming money)....No more MJs are coming through.

No internet was part of the reason TV ratings were higher back in the day.
Explain to me why the TV ratings for the NFL are still higher than ever, even after the presence of the internet/social media/multi cable channel tv/endless entertainment options

The nfl is the only sports league who can get massive ratings on tv, other sports can’t do it

Is it the Sunday factor? The fact that playoff football games are on Sundays, on free over the air channels available to everybody? I know the nba is on tnt(cable channel)

Halftime show/commercials for the casuals?

Yes.

Sunday's are basically dedicated to football, not much competition on the air for those hours, add in less games in general so they mean more to the fans.

Football in general creates more of a cookout vibe too, shyt's like a mini vacation for people.

It's probably the only field in entertainment that's got a monopoly on a day of the week like that :whew:
