I think developers are mostly just scared of another cyberpunk situation since it damn near ruined CDPR, it’s why they keep putting emphasis on “when it’s ready”….they show it now, they’ll be under pressure to give a date a few months from now, then it’s the constant backlash from fans when you keep pushing it back, with the inevitable shyt show when it’s been too many pushbacks and they have to release it in a shytty state
Cyberpunk is such an interesting situation because I just had a feeling, well before its release, that something like that was gonna happen. When a game gets hyped to the level it did, you just know it almost never reaches it. TLOU2 had that amount of hype too, and well... We all know how things turned out, despite its massive success. And it's unfortunate that CDPR had to be the cautionary tale for developers to take heed, but it's a very sobering lesson for everyone to learn.
Take Bayonetta 3 for example. I have yet to fully play a game at this point, but I want to. But look at how Bayo 3 had radio silence for YEARS, to the point where people were legitimately concerned for Platinum Studios. And then, they drop a trailer out of nowhere, and it looks great. They even gave a vague "2022" date, which shows that they're nearing the end of development. Now, should they have announced the game as early as they did back in the day? No, but in the end... They chose not to share info early on and it paid off.
Bigger example is FF7R. That game had radio silence for 3-4 years, and then had a huge promo run in spring-summer 2019. And when playing it, there's so much attention to detail and love that's been put into the game that makes you realize how much work it really took to get there. You appreciate it that much more, because you know they didn't take shortcuts.
As much as people complain about games not being released or even having much info coming out, 9 times out of 10, it's for the best. Unless a game pulls a Duke Nukem Forever, it's always been beneficial to wait until they're ready to show it. And despite people not loving TLOU2, I don't think ND has ever disappointed with the gameplay aspect. So I think they're making the right choice.
