They got shytted out for having a sound that was polished. It's the main reason Nas got hate for working with them on IWW. People cared more about him working with them than actually listening to the beats themselves.
Is that the reason IWW wasn’t as revered as Illmatic? Because personally, I’ll take IWW as his best album but Illmatic is a close second.

I guess Nas went “mainstream” with the Street Dreams remix with the Piss Piper, the Lauryn Hill joint and they felt he was selling out.

Put it like this. They treated Trackmasters the same way they treat HIt Boy right now. But the streets fukked wit IWW heavy. They were hypocrites too. shytted on Nas but showed love to Biggie. Had an issue with him working with Lauryn while simultaneously praising the fukk out of The Score album. Had a problem with his mafioso and drug raps with Esco image yet praised all of his Esco features leading up to it from Mo Money Mo Murda, Fast Life, Eye for an Eye, Verbal Intercourse etc etc.

It’s exactly why.

IIRC, The Source originally gave it four mics because of that reasoning.

They revisited it in 2002 and gave it five.

That’s why I never listen to the critics. I remember everyone bumping IWW… I mean literally everyone. 1996 will never be matched in terms of classic albums dropped.

This song took on a new life when I listened to it with headphones. IMO, I think "Take It In Blood" is what Salaam Remi crafted his sound around when he was working with Nas.
