I also forgot about Push saying this album was Kanye capturing the best moments in Nas's career. There were attempts made, but I'm not really hearing it. I mean, "Not For Radio" is definitely an aim at "Hate Me Now", but the urgency is missing. "Cops" seems to be a nod to the
Untitled era, I guess that one succeeds. "White Label" and "Bonjour" are definitely nods to IWW era Esco. While dope, they lack the effortlessness of that era, but capture the elegance and extravagance. "Everything" seems to be more of a nod to "If I Ruled The World", which Kanye throws off because of his songing and it drags along. "Adam & Eve" is more Stillmatic/God's Son era Nas, and to me is the highlight of the album. "Simple Things" sounds like a nod to the
Life Is Good era. I don't really like feel the productuon on that one and it ends abruptly.
Overall, in terms of capturing the best moments in Nas's career, this album is pretty hit and miss. The strength of
Life Is Good is that it was a smoother listen with some spotty areas, but minor. With
Nasir, there's some cringey sex rhymes and Nas going alternative facts on us (I like challenges to the status quo, but what he passing off as fact was
). Overall, it's a nice listen.
Also noticed no nod to Illmatic. With Life Is Good, No I.D. captured
Illmatic Nas perfectly on "Locomotive" with Premo-esque production and Nas was dropping some
lines. Large Professor was a nice touch to complete the cypher.
