Hit-Boy: Producer Of The Year

Long Hit-Boy interview where he talks about Magic, King's Disease 1, 2 and 3.

Excellent interview.

Its interviews like this that leave me straight up bewildered why ANYONE who considers themselves a fan of Nas would want him to work with any other producers. Hit-Boy and Nas have literally struck GOLD in having a great relationship that transitions seamlessly into the music instead of vice versa. This is the type of synchrony we all WISH our favorite artists could find with producers. Jay had it with Kanye and Just Blaze and one time. Common had it with NO I.D. Wutang of course had the RZA. And for newer artists I would put Kendrick and Sounwave in that category. The closest Nas has ever come to that level of a producer executing his vision flawlessly was with Salaam Remi, and I LOVE Salaam Remi and think he’s given Nas some of his most timeless work. But Hit-Boy is that rare producer who can do it ALL. Boom Bap, Trap, West Coast Synths, R&B, hell if him and Nas announced a goddamn Country album i’d whole heartedly believe they were going to drop some heat.

Hit-Boy has done what any other producer you could name has failed to do. He’s INSPIRED Nas. And he’s ENCOURAGED Nas to not second guess himself. Goddamn TIMBALAND couldn’t do that.

Hit-Boy got Nas to reunite the muthafukking FIRM. Hit-Boy got Nas and Anderson Paak on a track. Hit-Boy got Nas and Eminem on a track! Hit-Boy got Nas and LAURYN HILL RAPPING ON A TRACK!

Madlib who? Alchemist what?

I don’t want to hear NOTHING about Nas working with no other producer until the man himself announces it. He called Hit-Biy his Quincy Jones. Thats a HELL of a statement that speaks towards Hit-Boy’s mastery of the craft.

It’s just a balance, like I said, I wanted to be his essence. Anything I play him, it’s going to be something I can hear him on. I’m not just playing random beats. Even if it has a different texture to it that you might not be used to hearing Nas over, it’s still going to have a break beat or a drum pattern that feels like I can hear Nas over.” Hit-Boy

Dope.

Just a heads up for anyone that just watched the video. The part about Magic isn't in the video. It seems like they gave him producer of the year before Magic even dropped, then went back and talked to him about Magic. The part about Magic is transcribed at the bottom.

How did that early vision evolve over time the more you two continued to record?

We started with love songs. We started with “All Bad.” We started with “Replace Me.” We started with songs that were talking to the females. In King's Disease II, we started with “Death Row East,” so it was a completely different momentum, different synergy. And same with Magic, I personally just wanted to take it and make some Nas beats. If we would've came out with Magicfirst, they wouldn't have understood what we were doing. So we had to really just back them down. I look at this sh*t like the NBA. We just backing them down. And Magic, it's just like us at the All-Star game, throwing a ball through our leg, right off the backboard, dunking on n***as. That's how I look at it.”- Hit-Boy

Nah, you guys are wrong on this one. It has nothing to do with being on a major or being a surprise release. Run The Jewels 4 was literally released on Mass Appeal and got reviewed by every major publication. If the editor wants something to get reviewed, it's going to get reviewed.
RTJ4 wasn’t on Mass Appeal. RTJ2 was, and it was co-released with a label.

What difference does it make if it's RTJ1 or RTJ10? If a publication doesn't review the album it's because they didn't feel the need to. Has nothing to do with major labels.

This was the best article I've read with anything related to Nas in it in a long time. Hit-Boy is saying a lot in here and once again he's pressing the right buttons in regards to Nas.. He flatout says yea we got love on the first 2 but right now we need less conceptual stuff and u just talking ur shyt and I'll match it with the beats.. Hit-Boy is a genius.. Dudes literally created a boom bap classic just to quiet the noise from a few boom bap critics on Twitter LOL

There was another label involved with RTJ2 as well...

The label situation is the big issue. Holiday second. If the album came out December 1st would Pitchfork have touched it by now? Maybe. What about Rolling Stone. IIRC they didn't review KD2 either. Publications pay for reviews usually. They don't spend much money on independent artists or albums.
