Whatā€™s even more perplexing is that Nas just did an album recently with Kanye and most Nas fans believe it be his worst most disappointing album.
The Nas stans in the Hitboy defense league are the same ones who keep calling that Kanye album underrated and slept on though. You're making that guys point for him with this post.

1994 - 1996: Dropped 2 of the best hiphop albums of all time + a bunch of classic feature verses

1997 - 2000: Dropped 2 solo albums that went platinum (even if the purists weren't feeling them)

2001 - 2004: Dropped 2 platinum albums and 1 gold album. Also drops 'Lost Tapes' (during this period 2 of those albums would be labelled classics)

2005 - 2012: Dropped 3 gold albums that all reach #1 in the chart. Also drops 'Distant Relatives'

2013 - 2018: Silence....

2018 - 2023: Drops 5 albums in 5 years including 1 Grammy winner, 1 Grammy nominee, and 1 album (Magic) that old school Nas fans label one of his best

Nas is the undisputed GOAT with a run in mainstream hiphop unmatched by anyone.

I'm curious for those around at the time (i was around 10 then). What was the presence of Nas' name and music from 1997 to pre Stillmatic. I find it a fascinating era about Nas and somewhat defined where he went as an artist after.

I know he was all over the Clue tapes and had work with the Firm and NORE, loads of features and then of course two albums in 1999 which sold well. But this may be a Def Jam centric thing, but on lot of podcasts and the conversations about that era focus naturally on Jay, DMX and Ja. when people talk that era Nas doesn't come up in conversations as being an era defining artist for that late 90's period (and arguably he wasn't when compared to DMX, Jay and Ja)

As someone who wasn't there, it feels like A) not being part of Dej Jam machine didn't help in that way b) Firm not taking off how it should meant, while Roc had a crew of rappers, Nas went back to being dolo

@Ziggiy question why are the Sony vault songs never being released I remember you saying that

Iā€™m not sure thats just what Nas said. He said it in the interview with Nore. Paraphrasing but he basically was saying that he had a whole album worth of material with Havoc thats in the vaults and when Nore asked when the world was going to hear it he said ā€œAll that shyt is STAYING in the vaultsā€.

Probably one of the few times I'll get to say this, but I really like LAX. It's the first Game album I ever listened to and I've been playing it for weeks.

I'm assuming he has better albums than that, right?

The Doctorā€™s Advocate is his best album in my opinion but most think The Documentary is his best.

Heā€™s got a lot of solid albums. LAX is dope. The Red Album is dope. Jesus Piece is good. Documentary 2 was kind of a comeback for him. Heā€™s got a real good discography

Alchemist is one of the greatest producers of all time. I dare say the man's a genius...but he doesnā€™t have the same level of chemistry Hit Boy has with Nas to create the magic they do. That doesn't mean he's any less of a producer, he's still amazing.

Another example I can use is Kanye. One of the greatest right but that half-assed album he did for Nas is a perfect example of a producer just not having the right chemistry with the artist. That's not to say they haven't made great tracks together.

Another example is Hit Boy himself. I really don't like a lot of his beats and I didn't even like his last album. If I had a top 30 favorite producers list he probably ain't even in that either.

HOWEVER when he gets with Nas this nikka turns into Top 5.

:yeshrug:

Edit: I'd just like to add nikkas in Paris is my favorite Hit Boy beat of all time. It's one of the greatest beats of all time. Hit Boy is talented but it takes certain artists to dig the creative genius out of him and Nas is numero uno.

Agreed.

On his own do I enjoy hit boy more than the other producers mentioned here? No

But with the chemistry he has with Nas and how Nas feels the urge to create on such prolific level working with hit to go on to make 4 dope albums in 2 years if it isnā€™t broke why fix it?

Before hitboy it took Nas 6 years to make anything new and 8 years before a new full album I canā€™t complain

Would I be mad if he went in another direction this album? No but letā€™s not act like another Nas and hit album would be tough to take

If you would have told me three years ago Nas would find one producer to work with and drop 4 dope albums in 2 years Iā€™d say youā€™re crazy and where do I sign up for that
