What tracks were mediocre on I am outside of dr knockboot and big things?
I Wanna Talk To You, Money Is My bytch, Kissing. That’s five ehh tracks that range from trendy shyt to questionable ladies tracks to just meh.

I’d give it a 3.5. It’s like the typical mainstream rap album from that era with trendy tracks, pop rap attempts, ladies tracks, a DMX feature and a couple “real rap” tracks for the heads. It wasn’t the best attempt at that in 1999 - Vol 3 is, followed by And Then There Was X - but it’s not a bad album. It’s cool. Good album.

I Am >>>>>>>>>>> Vol.3 and I will fight ANYONE on that. I had 2 copies of Vol. 3 as a hook up before the album even dropped and used to bump it everyday. It was CLEARLY Jay’s worst album up until that point. Vol.2 is the better mainstream album. That would be a better comparison. Money is My bytch and Kissing was LOVED in the hood too. shyt even them State Property nikkas used to quote lines from it and the hook.

I think Vol 2 and 3 are better than I Am personally, but Vol 3 and I Am are closer in that 3.5 realm whereas Vol 2 is a clear 4 mic album IMO. To me the thing about all three is that they have super obvious trendy and mainstream style tracks and Jay was simply better in that lane than anyone outside of DMX. In terms of tracks like Money Is My bytch and Kissing...no one really cares about those tracks in hindsight. When you think of the standout ladies/pop/trendy/radio tracks on there...it's really just You Can't See Me Tonight and Hate Me Now. Whereas on Vol 2 alone you've got Hard Knock Life, nikka what nikka who, Money Cash Hoes, Can I Get A, and Money Aint A Thing. Vol 3 it's Do It Again, It's Hot, and Big Pimpin. So I agree Vol 3 is closer.

Vol 1 is the most mainstream and Jay's worst album of the 90s IMO. The trendy/radio/pop shyt was Hov trying and failing to be Biggie over Biggie-type radio tracks and it failed hard. Vol 2-3 are Jay finding his own lane for that shyt.

I remember Timbo saying he didn't understand why they didn't make You Won't See Me Tonight a single. That was a weird miss, on the label size. Might have sold another million with a video of Nas and Aaliyah at that time. RIP.

It was supposed to be a single but both Nas and Columbia moved the marketing budget to Nastradamus. Remember Illmatic had four music videos. It Was Written had three music videos. The I am/Nastradamus era had four videos in total.

Bruh the music on I Am is just better than Vol 3 to me. And the worst songs on Vol 3 are WAAAAY worse imo.

Vol3 was fresh at the time but aged horribly. The mariah Carey track, snoopy track anything the mariah Carey joint...
