I think Vol 2 and 3 are better than I Am personally, but Vol 3 and I Am are closer in that 3.5 realm whereas Vol 2 is a clear 4 mic album IMO. To me the thing about all three is that they have super obvious trendy and mainstream style tracks and Jay was simply better in that lane than anyone outside of DMX. In terms of tracks like Money Is My bytch and Kissing...no one really cares about those tracks in hindsight. When you think of the standout ladies/pop/trendy/radio tracks on there...it's really just You Can't See Me Tonight and Hate Me Now. Whereas on Vol 2 alone you've got Hard Knock Life, nikka what nikka who, Money Cash Hoes, Can I Get A, and Money Aint A Thing. Vol 3 it's Do It Again, It's Hot, and Big Pimpin. So I agree Vol 3 is closer.
Vol 1 is the most mainstream and Jay's worst album of the 90s IMO. The trendy/radio/pop shyt was Hov trying and failing to be Biggie over Biggie-type radio tracks and it failed hard. Vol 2-3 are Jay finding his own lane for that shyt.
I remember Timbo saying he didn't understand why they didn't make You Won't See Me Tonight a single. That was a weird miss, on the label size. Might have sold another million with a video of Nas and Aaliyah at that time. RIP.
