There is absolutely no reason a quality album like this shouldn't atleast be at 80K.

Nah it's a sign of the times. Artists have found different ways to make money and the cost of production is way cheaper without mass distribution. Alfredo did 20k and Freddie and Alchemist couldn't give a fukk less...

Most of Nas original fan base is :flabbynsick: or dead from natural causes. He sells due to sole quality and quality alone, and internet communities 30+ like us

Where did you get those numbers? I read that he did 18k in pure sales first week last year.

28K in PURE SALES would have been phenomenal
My bad wikipedia had it wrong.
"King's Disease debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 with 47,000 album-equivalent units, of which 28,000 were pure album sales"
King's Disease - Wikipedia

On the Billboard site :
"Nas claims the chart’s highest debut of the week, as his new album, King’s Disease, bows at No. 5 with 47,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units total 28,000 (equating to 36.17 million on-demand streams of the album’s songs in the tracking week), album sales comprise 18,000 (boosted by merchandise/album bundles sold via Nas’ webstore) and TEA units equal 1,000"

This means a 8/10 minimum for the albums he's talking about. And he was really feeling the tracks he listened to in his last live.

9s or 10s. I know someone who listens to that Lingua Ignota artist he's referring to as well and its straight critical darling material, too dark and unsettling for mass consumption

Damn, it seems like even 100k first week is unattainable now.....is that how much streaming has affected sales? I remember back 10-15 years ago if a popular artist didn't go Gold in the first month or two it was considered a failure

Thats pretty much it. Streaming has irrevocably changed the course of the industry. You have to do MASSIVE streaming numbers to crack 100k. Physicals don’t cut it and many elder statesmen are still heavily physical sales based artists.

Nas getting what amounts to a 4K sales INCREASE is pretty good. The only other thing that Nas and his team COULD have done was

1). release EPMD 2 with Eminem as the lead single/video

2). Go on a press run including interviews with Breakfast Club, LA Leakers, etc. basically what he did last year.

Overall however Nas and his team did a masterful job just by dropping an undeniably CLASSIC album. There simply couldn’t have BEEN better word of mouth for this album.

Number 5 just like the last one. But is this so far? Or the projections?

These are projections. They can go up or down depending on certain factors. For example last year he was predicted to debut within the 40-45 range and did 47k. So based on these estimates his highest total could be 55-56K

Whoduniting what amounts to a 4K sales INCREASE is pretty good. The only other thing that Nas and his team COULD have done was

What's absolutely insane is that Drake will do 800,000 plus despite that. Regardless of whether it's good. Scorpion was borderline trash and it shattered everything.

I'm cool with it being single-less. The album never needed Eminem, as the last thing he made that you'll hear on the radio these days is the Monster or Love the Way You Lie. Kendrick works on that track as far as mainstream artists but not much else (and be as it may he might be done with music) but if you can't grab him you grab someone from the old school or grab Hov, Black Thought, Jadakiss, Freddie Gibbs or Pusha T, dudes that can really work off-kilter beats. Kiss and Thought are aliens, Freddie finds pockets with fuxkingadlib of all people, and the others have direct experience with Hit Boy.

First negative article I’ve seen:

Nas ages a little too gracefully on ‘King’s Disease II’

“TECs in the dresser, money off tech, pushing a Tesla/Rolled up a fresh one, it's one IPO to the next one” is almost unbelievably depressing to hear, less because of Nas’s participation than because of the sentiments’ ubiquity.

Too many (white) critics in hip hop don’t understand it’s roots in housing projects and its bravado nature. They can get the fukk out of hear hating rhymes like that

Nas should be unhappy and depressed, writing rhymes in a project hallway before taking the train to his graveyard shift job
