Not only that.

I can point to one moment where i fell in love with hip hop and became a nas fan overnight. That moment was coming home from summer camp and hearing If I Ruled the World for the first time blasting out of our living room. My sister had just hooked up a new stereo system to the tv and MTV Jams was on. I had opened my moms car door and immediately heard it in our driveway.

My reaction was probably a combination of :ohhh::dwillhuh::gladbron::whoo::ooh::ohlawd::mindblown::banderas::lawd:

I knew L Boogie because the year before, in 4th grade, I had stolen The Fugees album from that same sisters college dorm and had memorized it line for line by the summer.

Hearing Nas voice and delivery for the first time coupled with Lauryn’s singing is one of the most memorable points in my childhood:mjcry:

I love to hear that breh.

When that song came out, I was a senior in high school, so thanks for reminding me that I'm an old head politicking and congregating with youngins. :mjcry:

But real shyt... when that song dropped, my naive 17 year old hella optimistic self thought that everything would be uphill from that point on for us as black people.

:mjcry:

If you would've told me back in '96 that in 25 years not only would the collective mind state of black people be retarded almost back to the 1600's when the first slave babies was born in America with no knowledge of their past, but that we would be fighting politically and socially for our right to be seen as ignorant and classless people, I would've told that you were a complete fool.

Not with all the work Bill Cosby, dikk Gregory, Robert Townsend, Spike Lee, and many others did to hold up a mirror for us to see what we are, what we could be, what we should be, and what we don't want to be.

But here we are...
