Wow....I just saw the Best Rap Album list. That was one of the more "Lyrical" Rap Grammy Nomination list in a long time. It also seems they didn't focus on "Sales" but body of work. Also those aren't bad albums at all. Jay Elect and Jay's (Low Key was a collaboration album, lol) was good. Royce did his thing. Gibbs and ALC was dope too. D Smoke actually has been coming up for a while now. Haven't heard all the album but a few tracks. But I don't see how NaS isn't the best choice on this. NaS was nominated for 4 Grammy's with "Life Is Good" and didn't get a single one. I was sure "Daughters" was a lock and it got 2 nods. Grammy's do love giving out a "Lifetime Achievement" type of Grammy and this is the perfect spot to do it for NaS. "King's Disease" hasn't left rotation in 3 months. Happy to have a NaS album for the winter too. NaS, Snoop and Busta are the most snubbed Rappers in Grammy History:
Snoop - 17 Nominations (Most Nominations without a Win)
NaS - 14 Nominations
Busta - 12 Nominations
Though the "Non-Grammy" Hip Hop List is filled with Legends like Run DMC, Biggie, Tupac etc I think it's time for NaS to finally get his due. The fact his 1st Grammy would be for "Best Rap Album" is right. I'm shocked nothing else got nominated like "Car #85" shoot I think "Full Circle" Deserved a nod but all those other rap single nods went to all the "Streaming" songs. I've said from the beginning NaS's body of work is what sells more than his singles. This might finally be it. Amazing to get this Nod all these years later. Here's his nomination history
Year Nominee / work Award Result
1997 "
If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)"
Best Rap Solo Performance Nominated (Lost to LL Cool J "Hey Lover" ) (LL's song had Boyz II Men not shocked)
2000 I Am... Best Rap Album Nominated (Lost to Eminem "Slim Shady LP") (BS, "I am" was WAY Better)
2003 "
One Mic"
Best Music Video Nominated (Lost to Eminem "Without Me" Video) (Nope "One Mic" was a way better video)
"
The Essence" (with
AZ)
Best Rap Performance by a Duo or a Group Nominated (Lost to Outkast "The Whole World") (Just glad AZ and NaS got nominated together, I like "The Essense" more than "The Whole World" but Outkast was a grammy fav)
2008 "
Better Than I've Ever Been" (with
Kanye West &
KRS-One) Nominated (Lost to Common's "Southside") (Sorry "Classic" was better and would of been a great chance to give all those guys a Grammy)
Hip Hop Is Dead Best Rap Album Nominated (Lost to "Graduation") (Not beating Ye during that run)
2009 Nas Nominated (Lost to Tha Carter III) (Wayne was on fire at that time)
"
N.I.G.G.E.R. (The Slave and the Master)" Best Rap Solo Performance Nominated (Lost to Wayne "A Milli") (The Fact this track was even nominated was dope)
2010 "
Too Many Rappers" (with
Beastie Boys) Best Rap Performance by a Duo or a Group Nominated (Lost to Eminem "Crack a Bottle") (Damn even a Beastie Boy's feature couldn't get it done. Eminem was getting Grammy's for so many average tracks, smh)
2013 "
Daughters"
Best Rap Performance Nominated (Lost to Hov and Ye "N!ggas in Paris) (Well Daughters should of came away with one of the two nods)
