they dodged a bullet with that one.
potential flop.
Without them even pushing that song as a single, it still charted. Doubt that it would've flopped.

Damn, seems like most of yall hated "Life Is What You Make It"
That was the cut to me
its listed as a single on the album sticker.
i still have it on mines.
im just saying, if it ended up being the first single, that wouldve been a horrible look for Nas. it wouldnt have ended well.
It's not listed as a single on the hype sticker. It simply says the album includes "Nas Is Like", "Hate Me Now" feat. Puff Daddy and "You Won't See Me Tonight" feat. Aaliyah. 2/3 were singles with videos and one of them ("You Won't See Me Tonight") wasn't.
.
How wouldn't it have ended well? The song still charted. I Am came out near the peak of Puff being the most hated person in Hip Hop. And of course, even with "Hate Me Now" being Nas firing back at his critics saying he sold out, there was still flack for him doing a song with Puff. Album still ended up doing up numbers and "Hate Me Now" was one of the hottest songs that Spring/Summer. Don't see how "You Won't See Me Tonight" would've fared worse.
exactly.
u just proved my point.
"hate me now" was a huge banger.
only ultra-purists were mad at the idea of him standing next to puff.
"wont see me tonight" is a generic girl radio single. LOL. you dont see how that would be a bad look as a first single for a guy who had been tagged as a sellout for the past 3 years leading up to this??
How is your point proven?
Of course, "Hate Me Now" was a banger, but still hated on and viewed as a sell out attempt by the same people who had previously written him off for It Was Written and The Firm.
"You Won't See Tonight" wasn't a "generic girl radio" single. Why? Most if not all of the "generic girl radio" singles were singles were where the rapper was pretty much pandering to a female. This song was not that.
Example of a "generic girl radio" single:
the backlash for "hate me now" was minimal in comparison to the flack he caught for those albums.
the song you just posted is generic too. whats your point?? difference is, it wasnt slated to be the 1st single, or even a single at all.
It was the same. Those putists hated "Hate Me Now" as much as they hated the previous album. This was Nas, who they deemed the messiah of Hip Hop aligning with Puff, who they perceived as the devil.
And no, "You Won't See Me Tonight" was not generic. It didn't sound like anything else out at that time.
alot of the people who hated IWW were more lenient towards Nas in '99. thats why i used the term "ULTRA-purists" instead of simply saying purists.
different era. different line of thinking overall with the new crop of fans in the mix. the naysayers were very much out-numbered.
it also helped that the very first video was "nas is like".
then right behind it, "hate me now" drops like a bomb, and is pretty much his apex single.
"wont see me tonight" sounded like a timbaland throwaway. everything about it sounded generic.
but hey, he couldve rolled with it as a 3rd single. it wouldnt be that big but it wouldnt have hurt either. im just saying that using that song as the lead single wouldve been a suicide mission.
You deaded your argument with this statement:
"it also helped that the very first video was 'nas is like'".
And if Nas would've rolled with "You Won't See Me Tonight", it would've came AFTER "Nas Is Like" seeing how this article dropped after "Nas Is Like" was already released. "Nas Is Like" was the song that fed his day ones and regained a lot of the naysayers.
you couldve ended this whole thing 8 posts ago by saying the bolded.
i wouldnt make it the 2nd single either tho. the 1st 2 were out at the same time.
so it would have to go 3rd.
i said it would flop as the lead single. i didnt say it wouldve flopped period.
"you wont see me tonight" has absolutely nothing in common with the IWW singles. you just lost out on a potential dap.
