Very underrated album.

Better than It Was Written or Stillmatic.

I think it didn't get the love it deserved because:

1. The hype leading up to its release was INSANE ("word on the street is Nas is taking it back to Illmatic!")

2. The bootleg. I thought the retail version was great, but there is no denying that some of the bootleg songs were better than some of the retail version songs (although I think most people take it too far in their love for the bootleg over the retail version). This created a disappointing, unsatisfied perception of the retail version for many people.

The album where Nas went from disappointing (on IWW) to flat out sucking. No legend has had a worse 5 year stretch in their supposed prime than Nas did from 1996-2000.

The stans defending this garbage are as bad as Fox News/Sarah Sanders. Alternative Facts ass bozos.

Legendary tracks:

Nas Is Like

Great tracks:

NY State of Mind Pt. 2
Undying Love
Favor for a Favor

Good tracks:

Small World
Hate Me Now
We Will Survive
Ghetto Prisoners

Bad tracks:

Big Things
I Want to Talk to You
KISSING

WTF Nasir tracks:

Dr. Knockboot
Money is My bytch
You Wont See Me Tonight

i could see why sappy nikkas would like KISSING but outside that:yeshrug: 3/5 for me

Easily his 2nd worst produced album behind Nastrashamus:hhh:

just another rap album with way too many tracks and just gutter trash filler u wonder how the fukk it got on an album of Nas caliber. It started out strong and was going good until Ghetto Prisoners ended and it started maybe the worst 5 track stretch of Nas career:hhh: 1/3 of this album being for the birds with bad club tracks, r&b hooks and dumbass sex rhymes and some sloppy Nas rhyming since that aint his lane:scust:

if it was

Album Intro
NY State of Mind pt 2
Hate Me Now
Small World
Favor for a Favor
We Will Survive
Ghetto Prisoners
Nas Is Like
Undying Love

itd be a solid 4 from me

What's creative or risk taking about the retail version.

Small World- Tells two seemingly distinct stories and weaves them both together keeping in line with the theme of the song

Favor for a Favor- nas and face vicious trade bars on how they make sure to off someone. "Send my enemy's ear, I'll send your enemies finger/with a pinky ring/ thats just a present my nikka

We Will Survive-Flips the one love concept to give praise to biggie and pac and gives a powerful third verse that brings home the message related to black on black crime and systemic racism

Nas Is Like- Just in terms of bars and the metaphors he uses.

Money Is My bytch- Wi never understand the hate this gets but the double entendred mixed throughout coupled with the lesson learned about money I always felt was dope

Undying Love- Nuff Said

On top of that everything on the album was actually about somerhing unline the abstract and directionless approach he took on IWW which everyone praises here

Undying Love is one of Nas most creative storytelling tracks. Dr knockboot is sort of like a skit/interlude yet is genius and is putting young man game. Both creative and risk taking. The content is still relevant to today times of metoo and surviving rkelly

“Don't) run up in her raw cause you get burned
For sure f***in with the typical horn, because
rock a Rough Ryder, cause whenever you inside her
Your local bodega is your supplier and
(Don't) take the p**** if she fighting
'Cause you saw what happened to Tupac and Mike Tyson
Especially if you're large some ho's are trife
Get you on a rape charge have you serving your life yo
(Do) get a yes confirmation before penetration
'Cause you wind up in a police station
get with no young b**** and hit it she PG-13
You rated are she not permited
(Do) check for ID

So, this was a pretty iconic album for me, at the end of my 7th grade year, I think I first heard heard Nas in 97 or 98, but this was when I really discovered his music, and talent, through "Hate Me Now", and eventually "I Am". I copped this from Target, and scammed my Dad into taking me, scraped together like 13.99, and it was a favorite since the first day I played it, on a little CD player in my room. My two best friends at the time would play it all the time, at everyone's house, my homies Mom actually tossed it, when she heard Undying Love lol

This was like the soundtrack to 99, hanging outside the house, 711 runs for candy bars and slurpees, daydreaming and walking home from school, from my boys house, throwing on my headphones. The eloquence of the storylines and cinematic quality of songs like "Small World" and "Undying Love", to the stripped down dollar and a dream tracks like NY State of Mind II, the adolescent romantic aspirations of a track like "You Won't See Me Tonight", giving game and oddly place sex ed on "Dr Knockboots"

Of course "We Will Survive", and "Nas is Like", I listen to almost all the classics from this on a weekly if not daily basis, truly definitive of an era, the peak of 90's excess, the end of the 90's, moving from child to teenager.
