I think Zetsu is also connected to the first somehow. I wouldn't be surprised if he was using a zetsu body suit jutsu as continues whenever Madara landed a near fatal attack. The Zetsu now is probably a biproduct of that fight and being merged with the statue.
Zetsu was created from the 1st Hokage's DNA, we found that out a while ago when Sakura examined his DNA.

We basically already know Zetsu's origin. After Madara fought the 1st, he escaped with some of his DNA (pause). He eventually used the DNA to create Zetsu.

Seriously. I complain too, but some of this stuff was JUST explained and the people who are annoyed by Obito getting an extended flashback had to know this was coming.

I don't mind the flashback so much as...Obito's motivation is going to be that he's a simp...In two weeks we've had Pedo-jokes and jokes about "poo" as the side humor (wtf)...We're once again cutting into multiple stories to tell another separate story (Tsunade's last move, Madara arrives on the battlefield, Sasuke and Oro travelling to some important location where the true history of the uchiha will be revealed...let's look at Obito's hi-jinks with clown zetsu aka the former most serious character in akatsuki besides Pain)...and the flashback is just telling us things that fans figured out the second they heard the name Obito.
