seems common sense approach to anybody that has discretion over your life and liberty. how would you act if your boss/teacher/parent approached you?
The question was "What would you tell your son if he is pulled over?" I mean, what would be your answer to that question that pertains what the best course of action there is to be taken in that specific scenario? Hes asking what do you think your son should do in that immediate situation.
I think people's issue here is tact and I agree Bernie Sanders has an issue with tact. But, really as the question was asked, there is no good answer to that question politically unless he bullshyts. If he wanted more in-depth analysis on police brutality then maybe a better question would be "what are your thoughts on police interactions with the black community and the topic of police brutality". The question asker instead wanted to ask the question creatively instead of asking his question straight forward. If he wanted creative oratory response, he would get a better response from say Obama who would probably say the same thing here at first but then go on to say "but we need to put proper checks on police departments and do better". Like I said, this is a problem for Bernie Sander and will be probably why he struggles to get support from certain people because his tact is lacking and can come off as an a$$hole. So he was the wrong dude to pose this question in this type of way too.

TBH the question itself is ridiculously loaded and goofy. What the fukk is he supposed to say? Run?
I mean regardless of the biases of police officers in general, the only thing to play the odds with them is act respectful and normal and hope it's an uneventful interaction. I mean what the fukk else can a normal person in that situation do?
Maybe record all interactions but I mean there is nothing special whether you are black or white you can do differently if you're pulled over except try to minimize hostilities and do anything on your end to make the interaction as benign as possible.
These nikkas are going to completely ignore this obvious and logical point because that's what nikkas do in these situations

The best thing to do is talk back with attitude. Don't show them ID, Insurance, or car registration. If they ask to put your windows down don't do it.
If you have a gun, be prepared to shoot. I'd honestly shoot first and ask questions later, the judge and jurors will have it on video anyway.
Most importantly always be ready to start the car or shoot just in case you have to run. Watch the officer's body language, if he looks twitchy, off, etc. Start the car and run, don't give him the chance to draw his gun.This works best if you have push button start and a fast car

There's nothing inherently "wrong" with his response but racial (black/ADOS) questions seem to be his one weakness.
He's good at talking about what's good for everyone but not as adept at speaking directly to ADOS without trying to include everyone else (LGBTQ+, Latinos, other immigrants etc).

Stop trying to be a smart ass and tough guy when dealing with police. They'll shoot you in the back on camera and get away with it. Your ego isn't worth your life. Simply listen to them like they're your daddy and go home alive. Sucks it has to be this way but that's just how it is.
