I haven't seen the movie but was he really an example of black, male strength family/communal strength? I've heard conflicting characterizations.

I would list Coach Carter but it's not empowering at all... it's pretty much Dangerous Minds with a black male lead. That whole 'tame the black savages' subgenre was and condescending as fukk.

One interesting example is The Mack, the main character's brother is a black panther who acts as the conscious foil for Maxwell Julien's pimp character (Goldy). What's interesting about this movie is that the actual black panthers forced the producers to write the character into the movie because that was the only way the production crew was allowed to film their blaxploitation movie on location in Oakland without getting touched the Ward brothers (real pimps from Oakland) gave the production crew the inside access to all the real tracks and players clubs in Oakland but even they didn't want no problems with the Panthers

I'd say so. He was a lawyer, fiercely committed to his wife and protecting their family , and intelligent and romantic
