I know two people who are hoarders and they are both mentally ill. Seen both of them today via volunteering. One of them I've never seen anything like that in my life. If folks are interested I'll speak on it tomorrow when I sober up.

edit: i lived next to a hoarder freshman year and his roommate was a turkish exchange student who found the piss bottles so disgusting he abandoned the american dream after one semester and transferred to college in the homeland

Had one in the family, traumatized me as a child. I had heard about grandma's "garage" for years before actually seeing it..I think I was like 10 when I saw it...walked in...took 2 steps in and ran out. Combination of rotten dolls, molded furniture, spider webs, musty scent, artifacts, and volume had me disgusted and shook.

my mom has minor versions of this going on with racks of clothes from the 80s she wont get rid of.

i can imagine a full blown psycho living like this.

i think it's gonna die out in our generation tho. i have very little attachment to clothes/items that hold no significant sentimental value. i'm not talking nostalgia sentimental value, i mean like my grandmother gave it to me for my birthday sentimental value.

My aunty was supposed to be on The UK one but she wouldn’t sign the waiver to speak to the therapist so they bushed her tapes lmao.

Even with agreeing to be on the show, you have to treat them with kiddie gloves.

Hers wasn’t as bad as the above but it was BAD.

We think it’s caused from grief (she buried a 6 day old child back in the day) and she hoarded ever since.

Hoarders have a SERIOUS poverty mindset in general which doesn’t help their plight.

They cling onto every little thing out of fear it won’t be replaced again like little plant pots, receipts, newspapers so old they’ve gone orange, old printers and computers from the 80s - and they ALWAYS need 2 or 3 of everything.

Sometimes they steal like kleptomaniacs and justify why they need what they stole.

They’re usually childless and unmarried so it’s just them rattling around in the house.

Nah, my granddaddy was living dangerously close to this until the family helped clean the house up.

My uncle by marriage had a brother that had a mental breakdown and his house was condemned by the city. Me and my brother along with some of my cousins tried to help clean it a little to save the house. His car was so nasty and full of stuff that there was only room for one person to sit in and that was the driver's seat and he even had rats in it. Couldn't even see out of the windows. He would literally throw a fit if anyone touched his stuff. His house looked like ybose houses on hoarders. I promise you it happens. I wouldn't believe it if i didn't see it myself. We had to shovel his house just to walk in the garage, he never took his trash out or anything and it smelled like death. The city bulldozed it and charged him for the repairs. He lived with his mom and when she passed away the house went downhill. Smh
