They been pushing for same night game breakdowns at Realgm, so it's an early one for this game,
What we learned tonight (Reggie certainly did at least) is that Willy needs minutes. The kid came in and was a spark that the whole team fed off of. Outside of that it was mostly the usual stuff with a slight exception, fourth quarter collapse? check. Ball movement fades out as certain guys over isolate? two checks for a couple of players. Hornacek not having a visible impact on what the team is running? Yup! But for a change of pace they pulled this one out. I'm not gonna praise this kinda W, not when all the calling cards of the tank crew were in place. This feels a lot like the same ole nonsense even if they managed to pull it out. As long as they can't put teams away and play panic ball in fourth quarters, I'm not feeling optimistic.
Rose: There's good, bad and ugly with every Rose game. The good, fairly efficient scoring and he had his head up looking to make passes most of the game. The bad, a fourth quarter where he started to force the issue and had TO's and went from good efficiency to just alright. The ugly was his defense matched with PG's. Dude struggles with screens really badly and is best used in the Calderon role of guarding SG's at this point. 20, 6 and 3 with 4 TO's; until this dude posts a good assist to turnover ratio I will keep bringing it up. But the increase in assists is a welcome sight.
Lee: 3-7 and only 1-3 from three point land but your boy put up 14 points thanks to drawing fouls (though two FTAs came from a desperation foul in the last 20 ticks or so). Lee didn't do much playmaking like he's flashed a couple of times, but he grabbed 4 boards and did alright on PG. George kinda torched him but it came down to height advantage more than anything, he was there just powerless against a great offensive player.
Melo: Three good quarters and one ugly one again, but this time he used up the Welo time in the third which preserved clutch Melo to steal a win. Melo's now approaching 15 games of efficient shooting with 9-17 for 26 points while notching 2 assists and 5 boards. But he also had 4 TO's including some UGLY ones (like when he got surprised by a double team late in a tight game). Gotta give dude credit though, nobody else was scoring in the fourth and he came through with some nice plays to get inside or to the line. He delivered in the clutch in this one and continues to shoot well. No shoulder holding tn either which is a welcome change.
KP: This is why you don't rush players back. Dude returned the same day he got an MRI for his sore achilles and has had all of one really nice quarter along with scattered decent and bad play throughout the rest. Tn just wasn't pretty. The Knicks featured him often in the 1st and he went 1-7, only making a dunk that Melo created for him. He was 2-6 from three but missed some wide open ones and his jumper from mid range wasn't any better. 3-11 for 8 points and just 4 boards in spite of minutes at Center in both halves. The kid ain't right, he's settling for jumpers every time and getting completely bodied inside...couldn't even power over Teague at one point, traveled instead.
Noah: 18 million dollars and he got 12 minutes tonight in spite of giving his typical high effort. He just is too flawed right now. 2 points, 6 boards and an assist for Noah isn't a bad line in 12 minutes but it was obvious that the offense opened up when Willy or KP was at the Center spot...and Rose needs space.
BJ: You know 9 points doesn't seem like much, but it made a difference. BJ's willingness to attack opened up some extra passing lanes and he really got off to the races often, creating imbalances that typically opened lanes for Willy to slide inside. 9, 6 and 2 with 2 TO's in 29 minutes. Not huge production for that much time but the slightly better job he did on Teague allowed Rose to stick to Ellis, which was a better match-up for Rose on D.
Holiday: While BJ and Willy sparked the second quarter offense, this dude's hustle was a big part of the defensive improvement in that quarter. 4-9 for 13 points, 3-7 from three, but the big numbers are 3 steals and 2 blocks. He's low key been the most consistent bench player lately and the only bench piece giving that effort on both ends.
Kuz: Yikes, dude never looked comfortable out there. At one point he never looked up and rose bounced a pass off his back. Even his trademark aggression on offense was missing. 11 minutes and just 1 attempt that didn't fall. He did tally a block and 3 boards but he looked weak on D and confused at times on offense. Rookies'll have games like this though.
KOQ: Honestly, it's weird that he ate the bench after being part of the second quarter run. He was 1-1, contributing 3 points, 3 boards, an assist and a solid defensive effort over 8 minutes. He and Willy were the most effective big man combo of the night, though the small sample size makes that negligible. It's just odd for something to work only to have Horny never look at it again...and this is a guy who lost all confidence when Fish did this to him.
Willy: Screw Melo's heroics, this kid gets the game ball. 5 for 8 with a double double off 14 points, 10 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks and a steal without turning the ball over. He came in and energized the team by hustling on both ends. Just off running the floor and seeking lanes to the hoop, he gave BJ an easy target for free assists. His post game showed up with finishes with both hands, off the dribble, off the pivot and also post up kick outs when doubles flashed. He even knocked down a jumper from midrange. His blocks were pretty too, though they were recovery blocks because dude still has pretty slow feet. Reggie the once Knicks killer and now Knicks hater even remarked that he needs 20 minutes a night...I agree. The kid has been a positive sum player on almost every night he's gotten up to and above 15 minutes. It's time to let him play through the bad nights and see how much he can develop with experience.
Hornacek: So playing Hernangomez early was nice after he didn't reward the kid for good minutes last time. Besides that, I was pretty disappointed in his coaching. In the third he ran out the two PG combo but let the team run ISO Melo on the wings for a sequence long enough to let all Knicks momentum evaporate. He's still trotting out a starting line-up that never starts games well. He went offense over defense with a lead late again, playing Melo and KP in the front court even though that tandem is bad on boards and leaves plenty to be desired on interior defense. Simply put, he needs to rein in the offense, another fourth quarter of AWFUL possessions being all the evidence I need but there are examples elsewhere as well.
Random: The Knicks got Free Throws tn!!! About damned time.
