I've wanted to make that comparison a couple of times but didn't because there's still a lot that could change over the next couple of years, but yeah, that's the kind of path the Knicks are on right now.

Except the Knicks hit on like 5 of their off-season signings. Pelicans missed on all of theirs.

Melo looks like he is going to make it through a whole season healthy to you

:patrice:

Start resting him now. Is. He's a long term "investment".

:stopitslime:

Tank and at least get into the lottery so maybe the league blesses the Knicks and they move up.
:ehh:

We aren't going to win a chip this year Breh's
:ld:

He looks like he's aching now, but I'm not gonna count on injuries or him missing extended time. If it happens, cool, then you tank. But giving him rest games isn't gonna be enough to tank. The Hawks were in a decent spot in the East and still threw in the towel on the season, other teams will follow. Tanking isn't gonna be as easy as "rest Melo and we'll lose out" if teams decide to actually bottom out which we can't do because of the NTC. Plus are yall really gonna be salty about getting to see how KP handles playoff pressure and responds? Seriously, heads gotta stop pretending that the only way to acquire a top player is with a top pick in the draft. Giannis himself went 15 (Kawhi went 15th too); Harden, Lowry and Thomas were traded for; Lebron and Durant are at their current locations because of free agency. So the best players on the top 6 teams (top three in each conference) and the best player on the team we just played all arrived at their locations via a means other than a top pick.

And AGAIN, I'm NOT saying that a top pick wouldn't be ideal. Just that it's not tank and become a contender or make the playoffs and there's no hope.

So the Knicks showcased a resilience that I wasn't sure they even had anymore. The Bucks put together multiple big runs that could easily discourage an away team and turn a game into a blowout. But each time the Knicks found ways to respond (mostly via three ball). Melo, for the second straight game, established himself through playmaking even moreso than scoring. He scored or assisted on 20 of the 33 fourth quarter points (got that from a Tommy Beer tweet). KP was back and looked rejuvenated from the few games off. Best of all, Hornacek finally really held some guys accountable. BJ showed nothing in the first half and Rose's third quarter was marred by poor defense and forcing the issue; so Horny went with Ron Baker and the kid (and whole team) responded. Defensive pressure at the point of attack reduces the need for bigs to give up position to their men and for perimeter defenders to cheat middle. It really showed with the Bucks held to 15 in the fourth.

Rose: Kinda a tale of two games for Rose. He came out in the first quarter as a facilitator and took what the defense gave him. If I'm not mistaken he locked in 5 of his 8 assists right there. But after that, he began to press (probably because the Knicks were playing from behind). He forced shots and sometimes was so focused on drawing the foul that he would put up an ugly attempt that gave the Bucks a quick transition for easy points. His defense has been problematic for a while now too. 12 points on 14 attempts (he's gotta be more efficient) and 8 assists (this I like to see) but what really needs to happen is that Rose NEEDS to get back to the type of defensive pressure he applied to Damian Lillard and Russell Westbrook on the west coast trip. He didn't shut those guys down, but he didn't let them get comfortable, which is what has happened with too many guards lately.

Lee: 11 points 3 assists and another beautiful chase down block in a close fourth quarter. He scored 11 on 5 attempts, great efficiency. My complaint on last night was that he wasn't aggressive with Snell. Snell went 5-6 including some wide open three pointers that happen when a guy chooses to go around screens instead of fighting through.

Melo: 26 points, 10 assists and 6 boards with just 2 TO's in 39 minutes...he should get today off the conference win be damned. Melo wasn't just a good passer last night, there were times where his court vision was absolutely absurd (finding Lee in the corner from a few feet behind the top of the key in transition for example). When Noah and KP fouled out and with Rose benched, Melo took the reins and even though he struggled with his jumper, dude did what had to be done as the leader to get a win, including that a go ahead three. His defense was spotty at best in this one with Jabari Parker getting easy ones and riding that rhythm to knocking down tough shots too; but Melo had some moments of really nice defensive play on the help side of things which is usually his biggest weakness on that end.

KP: KP came back and put up 26 points on 14 attempts in 29 minutes to go with 6 boards. He was hassled by foul trouble all night, but the offense when he was out there was fun to watch. His defensive presence is through the roof and I wish he'd gotten more time out there while Greg Monroe was working our bigs. His defense on Giannis was really impressive, Giannis was able to shoot over everybody else but KP is just too long for that ish. The rest also did some good for this kid's legs as he hit 3-4 from three including a shot from Curry/Lillard range right after blocking Giannis twice. The kid's star turn is just about certified and hopefully he starts getting the star calls soon because his drives to the basket weren't without contact, but they didn't get FT's.

Noah: 8 points, 9 boards to go with unfortunately 4 TO's. Noah had a really good one though in the lead by example category. Dude's shoulder is obviously ailing but KOQ still isn't quite back to pre-flu energy levels and Willy's defense isn't developed yet. So Noah was out there once again shaking off the pain and yelling through the pain while he fought for every board. He had some miscommunications passing that hit the TO column (threw an alley-oop to no one), but he also had a few good decisions where he picked out the right man to make the next pass and overall, it's hard to be mad at the guy. He's been good to really for the majority of the last 6 games or so.

BJ: That 11 TO second quarter mostly happened with this dude as the floor general and the second unit has been going on these TO runs for a few games now. The starters can't come off the floor and see leads evaporate in minutes just off of TO's and even if the whole unit is doing it, the PG is responsible for getting everyone under control. He also has lost his edge on defense, it wasn't good ever but at least he was getting up in people's faces. Now he can't figure out how to pressure without fouling. So yeah, went from a spark for us to a serious detriment in the recent collapse.

Holiday: Only played 8 minutes and was part of the crash and burn second quarter group. Call me bias, but I thought he did some nice things out there just in terms of making cuts and finding the ball but the stats don't show much.

Kuz: 7 points in 13 minutes on 3-5 with an assist in there but they attacked him defensively where the baseline back door cut continues to be available. He's aggressive as an on ball defender even if he's not great at it but his awareness of his man takes a backseat to ball watching too often. When he gets that balance down pat, he should become reliably productive. For now, around 15 minutes is about where I'd like to see him unless he's really getting shut out. Side note, his off ball movement is really good and has been all year.

Lance: I hammered Lance last break down because he doesn't produce when he's not scoring and his defense has been middling rather than high level for the most part. Last night, he went 4 for 4 including 2 three pointers while providing a huge defensive play in crunch time. 10 points in 20 minutes is the productivity we need from him and that dive for the ball when Giannis fumbled it was the type of hustle that endeared him to so many fans. On the bad side he turned it over twice and only had 2 rebounds on the rest of his line; but he's not in there for assists and boards. He's there to be a pressure defender and make his jumpers, which he did last night.

KOQ: He was outmatched by Greg Monroe on the defensive end a bit; the guy is just too big for KOQ and bodied him for deep position to get high percentage looks. But the bench leader was looking much closer to his pre-flu self last night. 4-9 for 9 points with 8 boards to go along with 2 steals and 2 blocks in 26 minutes. He's become really adept at poking away lazy entry passes to his man and seems to get a steal a game that way. In this one for the first time since getting back a couple of games ago, his off ball movement made an appearance and paid off. He made hard cuts and set good screens; those were missing two games ago. I still think he could play better but he's getting to the level where we can comfortably give Noah a breather to get that shoulder a bit better.

Ron Baker: This was the yearly undrafted rookie that we gas up and he showed the qualities that earned it in this game. The entire fourth quarter he played and posted 6 points, 4 assists along with the best defense against PG's that we've seen in a hot minute. He was such a pest to Terry that he drew a flagrant foul, how many rookies manage that against a long time veteran player? Baker has the size and hustle to fight through screens and active hands to make a ball handler uncomfortable (hard to survey the floor when the ball is getting poked at). Dude doesn't back down from contact and seems to like physical play. On top of that, he displayed better vision and passing last night than I've seen from him at any other juncture. The thing about it is that the assists he found largely mimicked angles that Melo and Rose have been taking when they handle the rock in similar situations. I used to love when KP would mimic a move that had been done to him or that Melo would pull (think post up shoulder fake to turn around jumper clips). Well Ron last night threw a top of the key fast ball to KOQ at one point that looked exactly like one of Melo's from earlier in the game. LOVE that ish. Until the other PG's play defense, I want Baker to get a few minutes, especially when we have leads to protect.

Hornacek: I didn't like him leaving guys out there to flounder for long runs, but he got them to snap out of it and go on their own runs in response each time. He had his starting front court both foul out with the team fighting to get back in the game but his back-ups came through. The big move though is the obvious one; he benched the PG's and went with an undrafted rookie third stringer who became an instant spark on both ends. He's been talking accountability and the defense on Brogdon and Terry wasn't good enough heading into that quarter, so he gave a kid a chance and the kid earned the minutes. By trusting Ron and letting dude close out the game with Rose and BJ watching, he sent a clear message to the entire team that the players who earn minutes are gonna be rewarded. I'm really interested to see what kind of Rose and Jennings we get today and I'm hoping Ron gets a chance to come in and see if that wasn't just a fluke run; even if it's only for a few minutes. This is day two of a back to back, our guys are typically sluggish anyway...perfect time to let Ron, Willy and Kuz try to step up.

Random: Milwaukee is one of the arenas where the crowd is most audibly into the game. Much respect to those fans.

Of course, Bleacher Report states Melo reveals shoulder injury.

Melo Reveals He's Dealing with Shoulder Injury (via http://ble.ac/teamstream-) http://teamstre.am/2i4bLWo

He needs an extended rest, honestly. I'd shut him down for a few weeks. It may never get 100% better but do everything necessary to preserve him so he contributed as much as possible through the extent of his contract.

Let the lineup be Rose, Lee, J. Holiday, KP and Noah and let the chips fall.

I'd be excited to see that.

Side note: Please do not vote Melo into the All-star game... He doesn't deserve it and we should want to see youth go crazy in that game(outside of LeBron of course)

Probably the best game I've seen from Melo as a Knick last night, which is promising because he played really well on Wednesday too. Noah creating extra possessions is such an underrated aspect of basketball.

The Rose thing is going to linger all year. I'd explore any trade options there and then consider buying him out. He's a total net negative. Pick up a PG from the D league or on waivers and play Jennings/Baker.

My eyes got so big on that exact pass you're talking about. I was scared that Baker was running out of his "juice" like he did in that Suns game where Hornacek admitted keeping him in too long. But god damn if he didn't prove me wrong.

Really was Meloesque, it's cool seeing them "borrow" moves from the vets.

Baker: Do we have a possible Ronsanity on our hands?
