Two things with yalls defense, that i've noticed anyway:
- One is with how they handle off-the-ball screeners: the defender whose man is setting the screen doesn't hedge or impede or switch. So the end result is the wing defender (Lee, Rose, Jennings, etc) gets clipped by the screen as their man curls into a wide open three unimpeded everytime. Doesn't matter if Orlando can't shoot 3s if it's wide open and, more importantly, they know in advance it's going to be wide open. And teams pass to where Noah's man is screening because one, he naturally drifts backwards towards the basket anyway (so he doesn't obstruct the trajectory of the offense player curling) and two, they know Noah doesn't want to switch on the screen anyway.
- Two, nobody knows whose responsibility it is to drop down for the initial help when there is penetration. Which means nobody knows whose supposed to rotate on whose man is now open once the primary help defender leaves his man. I saw this late in the 4th when Melo left his man wide open at the top of they key to drift down to help a drive.. but Jennings also left his man at the corner baseline to help on that same drive. So you had 3 knicks in the paint on 1 magic player, and the pass went to Melo's open mad for a straight on 3. It should probably be Jennings job to help there b/c a cross court pass is harder than a short pass to the top of the key but regardless it has to be one or the other, and whoever it is that commits, the next man over should be anticipating the kickout to the offensive player whose defender just commited to help.. and the next next man should be anticipating the next pass after that. But the knicks don't seem to know who should help to begin with.
I think the first problem is easy enough to troubleshoot, as the coach just needs to make a decision as to what the guy defending the screener should do in those situations. The second issue is more complex because that requires all 5 guys working in unison in how they are reacting, anticipating and recovering.. not just physical effort but mental.
