Just a few years ago, our worst contract was tied up in a player who was supposed to be the
thisclose second most important person for our franchise -
Amare Stoudemire.
Knicks fans, myself included, hoped, prayed, and were willing to sacrifice a prized possession to a witch doctor for our roster's production to make that leap that would validate the money we spent on Amare. The unrealistic Knicks optimism that fueled our yearly wish that he'd somehow be able to show that ability and health that he exhibited in his debut year as a Knick became just another Reggie Miller like dagger to the Knicks organization as we were left
only to be bamboozled by the only thing consistent about him - his constant
"I'm in the best shape of my life."
We now have this Knick era's "worst" contract and although it makes some things complicated regarding free agency, the person is not an individual who is a necessary cog in the machine. As long as
Joakim Noah is a Knick, whether he's on the bench or on the court, we will root for the veteran center. In the meantime, Phil Jackson's GM moves are moving at a pace no one predicted and is slowly but surely lightening the projected damage of such an albatross of a contract.
That's something we should thank the imperfect GM for, whether you like him or not. No. GM. Is. Perfect.
An efficient GM will take gambles - e.g. Porzingis at 4 in the draft, trading Jerian Grant/Lopez for Rose, signing Noah - but will also make the smart, dividend paying moves that will act as a check and balance on the gambles - e.g. acquiring an under 25 yr old Kyle O' Quinn, drafting/signing proven foreign talent, acquiring a young Justin Holiday and Courtney Lee.
Regarding the Phil Jackson checklist, being able to accomplish the goal of
having the future of our franchise, Kristaps Porzingis, continue to develop at an amazing pace while
holding on to a guaranteed star producer in Melo in a long contract, and arguably non-bank breaking contract(considering the recent CBA agreements/tv money) and
obtaining a former MVP point guard who very quickly has become the best PG the Knicks have seen in too long of a time while also c
onstructing a roster w/ chemistry and on/off court respect not seen since the 54 win '13 Knicks team - Phil's been a plus.
We have actually survived the fallout and our future actually seems bright.
