Like I said, consistency is what separates good teams from the forgettables and right now this squad is inconsistent as hell. This is twice now that they face a team with its backs against the wall and they show zero ability to match the intensity or hunger. The C's had a ref boost but the Wiz kids did it with making some three's they might normally miss (which shouldn't bury a team ever). The defense was awful, the offense settled for decent looks instead of continuing to break until the look was a legitimate good one. Tired legs made decent looks tougher and the team saw a solution in the second (draw fouls) but fled from that strategy. If not for two of our worst three point shooters getting hot in the fourth, this would be another blow out but to a team that has been all out of sorts so far instead of "at least it was to a quality opponent" status.
Rose: He wasn't bad at all. Wall got assists but for the early portion, Rose made him work for points. Rose finally found his jumper and drew fouls too. What bothered me about his game was the passing and playmaking, which had been looking very good in the recent run. I don't think he had an assist in the first half and when this team fails to move the ball, they typically get killed. 27, 4 and 2 along with a promising 3/5 from three; but his inability to get anybody else going hurt us.
Lee: I actually thought most of his takes were good looks, but he once again couldn't finish them. He tried a lot of things too, midrange to floater to hard drives...they all were washed. What really killed him though was that he couldn't beat screens to keep up with Beal on a lot of the off ball plays; that meant a lot of good looks for a great scorer against the guy who should be our most reliable defender.
Melo: 1 for 8 from three. That's where his stat line completely collapses. He settled over and over; which is something that happens after a good shooting night sometimes but is inexcusable. His passing wasn't actually terrible to me, with the offense floundering he did force a few things but what do you expect from the go-to scorer. The real disgrace here came on defense and rebounds though; you can't follow such a great defensive effort with the trash he went out there with a night later...it's obvious. 3 boards from him was terrible too.
KP: 16 and 7 with 4 steals; he used his length well on defense but honestly he didn't have a great offensive game in spite of his efficiency tailing up as it went on. What was missing were the timely makes to stop Wizards momentum and at this point the Knicks are starting to rely on him for those. He couldn't get the "over the hump" make which is probably attributable to tired legs but it hurt us...though let me add, that he's barely drinking age on a team with a bunch of vets. That they're relying on him for so much isn't supposed to be the case.
Noah: Followed a career performance on both ends against Andre Drummond by getting his lunch money taken by Marcin Gortat. Wasn't even good enough to break 20 mins in this one and a lot of that fell to looking pretty lost and lazy defending the pick and roll. Gortat sets borderline dirty screens, but Noah didn't do a damned thing to help his guards out and was poor at boxing out too. I think he took the match-up for granted.
BJ: Really excellent passing throughout this one and in the fourth quarter he showed out on offense. I just wish he woulda realized the Knicks needed the scorer from him sooner. Through three quarters on every drive, no matter how wide the lane, he looked to pass instead of finish. When he went up in that span; it was only when he expected to get FT's...which has been the case all season. I'm glad he's mindful of creating for others, but he's a capable scorer and needs to add that dimension to his game more consistently. If he figures that out, he'll be pushing one of Rose/Lee out of the starting line-up. Defense...can't have 'em all. 17, 10 and 5
Holiday: 8 and 4 on just 3 attempts plus he was a much better defender than Lee on this night. He was a good piece off the bench last night which is literally the story of every night.
Sasha: With the game still close enough for a come back, Horny decided that we needed energy from Sasha. Sasha came in for 2 minutes and completely lost Beal for a wide open three; was invisible on offense and hit the bench with a -5 point swing that spelled "the end." Chasson Randle is balling in Westchester...Sasha needs to go.
Kuz: 3 for 5 for 8 points, had an assist, a steal (all hustle for it) and a rebound (plus worked and tipped on the offensive boards too) in just 7 minutes. He hit two three's in that span while the starters didn't hit even one in the first half. Yet he didn't get off the bench in the second half when the team floundered everywhere. WTF Hornacek.
Ndour: Good defensive effort, chased some boards, turned a pull up J into free throws and overall was pretty steady for this one. Not a guy you love out there, but he's not doing anything wrong and he only mishandled one pass in 13 minutes which for a normal player is mediocre but for him that's a big step forward...smh
Willy: He was solid. 2 for 2, had a beautiful block that led to a transition bucket; and even though he only had 1 rebound, I caught him boxing out (he was the ONLY ONE TO DO IT) on a few possessions.
KOQ: Came in and hit a nice jumper, then proceeded to struggle and turn the ball over for the rest of his few mins.
Jeff: I can't blame him for a lack of effort. The man tried a lot of variants to get guys going; but I don't agree with most of the decisions. He left Melo and Lee out there in the first when neither guy had it going. He seemed skittish about having KP bang with Gortat as if Morris wasn't beating the kid up with forearm shivers like this was a prize fight. Holiday had a brilliant game the night before but spent most of the first half on the bench. Kuz had a really nice run out there and never saw the floor again. Then he fell for the fool's gold in the fourth and left Rose out there 39 mins, Melo 35 and KP 37 on the second night of a back to back during a blowout. You can't expect the starters to snap out of these lazy games if you're gonna just lean on them. Take it on the chin, bench them for effort and let the bench lose a game where they at least play hard.
Random: If you want to see the "pick your spots" mentality played to perfection...watch John Wall last night.
