Breakdown time:
So anyone making a season long projection (ie: the TNT staff not named Kenny) is a moron. Even the NY beat writers (Bondy as an exception and prolly Isola but I don't read his trash to know) acknowledged the obvious. This was a team that hadn't played together at full strength at all in the preseason and it was obvious. They were sloppy with the ball, late with cuts and to pass and had poor defensive communication that left the Cavs open from three most of the night (even when the Cavs were cold early). All of that said, on pure talent and some poor shooting from the Cavs, they were able to keep it competitive and you could see some nice signs. Specifically, KP was able to get separation through screens and find open spots; Rose was able to get into the defensive third almost at will (finishing was a mixed bag to be nice about it); and the drag on the defense from KP and Rose left Melo with good position and legitimate one on one situations to take advantage of (not the types where a big is waiting in the paint...Lebron had to square up and give up jumpers). It's annoying to say "give it time" but it's obviously warranted. That doesn't mean they'll definitely figure it out, I've heard even Chicago fans talk about his bball IQ as less than stellar and Noah's got plenty to prove himself...but if we look like this as game 15 approaches, that's when you sweat it.

The starters:
Melo: Matched one on one, Melo was on absolute fire. Just by running the floor, he got two or three easy looks early then rode the rhythm to some flat out abuse of one of the best defenders in the league. But once the doubles started, he had some real struggles. He turned the ball over on leaping cross court passes that are flat out dangerous even when executed perfectly and he started to force jumpers as the lead was inflating. So the hot start faded into an ugly game. His board work was passable, but not as tenacious as he's proven capable of and I'd say that's similar to his defensive play. He was okay on D rather than bad, but he could have been better.

KP: Had some very nice defensive moments in the middle. His catch and shoot three off the screen should be a staple as it's looked reliable since the preseason. I wish he'd attacked inside more often though, especially when Cleveland would go small on him. He settled for some pull ups when I felt he could drive and push to draw fouls. FT shooting was disappointing and Love was open a few too many times from three.

Rose: The promise is how often he was able to streak down court and right into the paint...but no one was really keeping up after the first quarter and he would pick up his dribble which meant tough attempts inside with no offensive rebounder near. He was blatantly more effective working the high pick and roll; when he didn't have it, he didn't create well for others and many times it wound up being an ISO for him, Melo or KP. He looked like a guy who never had a chance to learn the playbook. The TO's and misses at the rim could be lack of time out there with everyone or could be the lost edge that he's been accused of since injuries. We'll see how it all develops.

Noah: He's at his best when he can play from the top of the key and move the ball around. Defensively he wasn't great, wasn't awful. As a matter of fact, that was his whole game. Nothing special, nothing terrible. We need him to really captain the defense because no one else will and I'd like to see him be assertive as far as getting the ball and making people move. There were glimpses of him doing as much but hardly enough to be effective. With Rose learning the playbook, Noah needs to be a bit of a playmaker which he was showing he's capable of during the preseason.

Lee: Mr. Reliable all preseason came out and laid an egg. I'm not worried but he picked an awful time to miss even the good looks and start forcing things which led to some bad possessions and TO's. His defense was solid. I'm chalking this up as adjustment in a new line-up because he's much better than that.

The second unit:
KOQ: First stint wasn't bad, had an ill advised shot but played strong D and grabbed boards with real gusto. When he slid to PF for Willy, things got...ugly. He earned minutes with those last few preseason games, but if last night's effort is any indication..the Knicks might be better off going smaller (might is being nice about it).

Lance: The only new wrinkle in his game is that he's been less consistent as an impact defender than he was last year. He showed strong defending Love but had some dumb fouls and lapses when there were two bigs with him at the three. Last season his jumper was effective on a month to month basis, one month it'd be trash and the next he'd shoot 50% from three because everyone thought he'd lost it completely. He's still waiting for defenders to stop defending him, but that hasn't stopped him from bricking a few J's just to be sure. But last year when his offense was gone, he'd have positive impacts elsewhere so that I couldn't come down too hard on him...if his intangibles keep the invisibility cloak on, he's not doing anything to offset the brick laying portions of his season; which I repeat, lasted for a month at a time last season.

Willy: In his limited minutes out there the only thing I could really pick up was that he and KOQ are an awkward fit (sort of like Seraphin and KOQ were last year).

BJ: Low key moved the ball well when he set his mind to it. He pushed the pace but the Cavs transition D was fantastic on both he and Rose. Where Rose picked up his dribble, Jennings would dribble through and reset; but then he'd just dribble...and dribble...and dribble. When he made snap decisions, the team looked alright but all too often he got into these fits of completely ineffective dribbling that forced rush moves on a late shot clock. Teams with weaker transition D won't make him look as bad, but if they stop his bum rushes, he NEEDS to get the rest of the team moving more quickly.

Holiday: Only shot 2-7 but managed to be a real bright spot. His defense was the best on the team PERIOD, did Kyrie and others give him work at times? sure, but he forced them to take more difficult shots or double and even triple up moves just to create space. He ran the floor well and rebounded effectively too. The big stand out for him though was when Melo was doubled. He looked like the only player actively searching for openings on the floor which Melo rewarded three times in short order (Holiday hit 2 of those attempts for 6 points). He's a bench energy guy and seems like he could fit with any unit we try because he doesn't demand the ball but can do a bit of everything.

The garbage time kids:

Kuz: 7 points in 9 minutes, defense wasn't visibly bad but it was garbage time. If we're adjusting the second unit, I take one of the bigs off since that experiment failed all of last season (KOQ or Willy) and let this guy be try being a swing forward alongside Lance. With Holiday and Lance on the floor, we can survive while the kid figures out defensive rotations and he'd help the bench unit's offense which wasn't pretty.

Baker: Like Kuz, limited minutes but effective scoring. He had 5 garbage time points in 7 minutes and looked alright out there. Need more time to evaluate him fully.

Sasha: Played 3 minutes, made sure to take one really dumb shot in that time.

Coaching:
Hornacek: Tough to call him out with a team that hadn't played as a full unit before. With Rose gone all preseason, it probably would have been prudent to bring him off the bench and let BJ rock. The Knicks have a few days to get Rose up to speed now so it would have been a one time thing. But I understand why he chose to let the starters feel each other out in a real situation. He put faith in the bench unit when the second quarter started with Lebron and Kyrie both in there on some "sweep the leg" ish early, and they held it down just long enough for the starters to slip in and start eating at the lead when Lebron inevitably needed rest. I'd like to see more staggering of the starters, but can't complain at all, just something I think will help. It'll take a few games to really get a feel for his thought process since the rotation doesn't seem or feel set in stone when he literally got his full roster for the first time last night.

Other thoughts: We literally lost to three players with maybe an honorable mention to Jefferson. Kyrie looks poised to take another step. Love gets away with a lot of dirty ish off the ball and then draws frustration fouls from it, savvy player but it's annoying. Shout out to Joakim Noah warming up during the ring ceremony...I dig the disrespect now that he's a Knick though i always hated it before.

fukk y'all got besides being on that treadmill of not good enough to be relevant but not bad enough to get a pick and be worth a damn :jbhmm:

ATL baseball is :trash:, football is also on that mill (put faith in Flabby Ice brehs). ATL might be the WOAT sports city

It's all good if you come through. I just thought you would come through with the pass in time to see the first game. Sorry if I made you look bad.

9 assists is the biggest ball of confusion.

Of course we can attribute that to the first time Rose is playing with this team but I'm expecting much better next game.

I know everyone wanted to spoil the Cavs opener and EVERYONE looked like they were playing hero ball except Melo(he actually was doing his thing) and Porzingis.

:francis:

Im sure I saw melo literally wave off everyone for two iso plays in particular .:russ:...1 which ended in a brick and another a air ball :stopitslime:

Don't get me wrong he was far from Knicks biggest prob last night ...but ball movement stopped alot of the time when it ended in ' his ' hands along wit others

I remember that, too.

To be fair, he was on fire at the time.

I thought it weird that D. Rose wasn't bringing the ball down the court more. I didn't understand Melo as a point forward w/ Rose on the court.

I guess an argument could be allowing the defense to adjust on Melo as he brings the ball down court gives Rose a chance to be a silent killer with cuts but he's not a good enough shooter for that to matter.

I don't know.

As always, nice work with the breakdown. The second unit that ended up on the floor at the end of the 1st quarter was ugly. Zero offense plus poor defense.

Would be interesting to see More Holiday and maybe more Kuz in the rotation, to bring some energy... But the big problems, to me, remain the same:

- This team does not defend, specifically they do not defend the perimeter.
- The second unit's offense may depend on step-back Jennings jumpers
- Joakim Noah's contract is a complete and utter disaster

I didn't expect them to beat the cavs, in cleveland, on ring night, with Undertaker in the building... but it would have been nice to keep it competitive.

I really liked seeing Rose push it out in transition and get to the rack, hopefully with a little more time on the court, he'll be finishing those.
I almost spit out my coffee :laff:

Preeesssssssssssssed. Take this desperate shyt elsewhere.

Yeah, it would have been a little better if they would have finished in transition, but the lack of ball movement/assists is a concern. Jeff needs to figure out how to get these guys to spread the ball around consistently.
