NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
Micro-apartments have moved into Manhattan. The first of 55 units was gently lowered into place on a steel foundation in Kips Bay. The building on East 27th Street will be the city's first micro-apartment complex.
In March,
we showed you260- to 360-square-foot mini studios under construction in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The pre-fabricated modular units come equipped with kitchens and bathrooms.
The city suspended zoning laws to allow this pilot construction project. Developers are trying to build
innovative new housing optionsto meet changing needs of the city's population.
Designers tried to make micro-apartments because more and more New Yorkers are living in one- and two-person apartments and there's actually a housing shortage for single apartments
Some of the units will be for low-income tenants and others for veterans.
The micro homes are supposed to be ready for occupancy in January 2016. The rent will be about $2,000 to $3,000 a month.
