Fans have been moped in male soap operas for quite some time. It's nothing new.
True, current face Punk wouldn't work well but Punk as a tweener could. Have Rock want that title but
at Punk. Punk comes in at Rock and both 
at each other. They had legit gripes at each other that they can revisit unlike Cena/Rock which was clearly fake tension IMO. Or same scenario but w/ Bryan being a douchebag heel against Punk based on MITB.Rock:

Bryan/Rock is cool but I feel that Punk/Rock has more of a story to it considering Punk's promo/they really didn't like each other/wrestler vs entertainer (makes more sense here than Cena/Rock because Cena & Rock are fairly similar)/and it can free up Punk a little promo wise. I don't see Bryan heading right into an angle with the Rock out of nowhere over someone who openly criticized him and got a lot more popular over the last year. but hey, what do I know....

True, Cena ran those into the ground but Punk could get mad at how just because Rock wants the title he should roll over and let him have it? Nah
-He's held the title longer than Rock has ever had (just looked it up)
-How Rock is a product of WWF/E (lol like Cena) vs him toiling all over the country and world on the independent circuit for years just to have an opportunity be a guard for Cena at WM22.
-How he promoted himself through the 6/27 promo (Remember he was facilitating "change", now he's promoting himself over that change which is heelish)
-As a part-timer and movie star, the WWE isn't a priority for him (I don't blame the Rock for leaving) and if he won the title and left then what? He wouldn't be at house shows, Smackdown, or Raw defending against the likes of Tensai, Henry, Ziggler, Bryan, Rhodes, etc. but filming GI JOE 2 with the strap. Where would that leave the WWE where the main title isn't even in the damn company?
In addition w/ the usual gripes of part-time and each other's wrestling ability, I don't think a Punk/Rock interaction would be a total failure.
Crowd wouldn't want to hear that. It's a rehash of the Cena stuff and the fans DIED big time on the Cena whining despite everyone here marking out for it. And the Rock's road to success was much harder considering the competition compared to CM Punk if that's the route the promo would head so that wouldn't ride either.

when did this trend of feuding wrestlers fighting actual matches every week begin? I mean, you obviously have to show them interacting through promos, run-ins, impromptu beat downs, or in battle royals. But they shouldn't be in actual matches against each other if they are going to fight on ppv.
take hogan vs sting 97' for example. That match would have no hype if they had wrestled 4 times leading up to that fight.
