Walt may be a bad person but he's a great character and in TV land your status as a character determines your likability not your ethics. Al Bundy is a pretty shytty person but people love that character.
Breh I have no idea how old you are but you're a product of the recent era of TV.
Up until recently being a great character =/= fans would like you. There was a late 90's show called "Profit" which was kind of a precursor for all these anti-hero shows. Nobody watched it despite it being a great critically acclaimed show, with a great lead character....because he was considered too despicable.
"Oz" and "Sopranos" really opened the flood gates for people to enjoy a series totally independent of whether or not the characters had morals. And you know what the catalyst for that was? People admitting it was ok to like characters that weren't "good".
So that's why I'm at you trying to rewrite history. For the vast majority of TV's existence it didn't matter how good a character was, if he wasn't likable from a moral perspective.
Fred.
I stopped fcuking with Walter White when he refused to kill Jessie...Walter White never became "unlikable", that's partially credit to the actor. Duke (Hal from MITM) kept him likable throughout
Never seen Taxi Driver but DeNiro has too much charisma to ever come off as "unlikable"
@ Stringer being considered protagonist.. dude was a piece of shyt with swag. Clearly a villain of the WireDon't know if he qualifies as a protagonist, but I hated Stringer Bell. Just a despicable type of person
There ain't no rules to being creative, forget that. I'm glad you're thinking outside the box.Kenny Powers was a piece of shyt... but everyone loved him.
One of the main rules I always see about screenwriting is "don't write an unlikable lead" and it bothers the shyt out of me. Why the fukk not? Why do i have to "root" for the main character? it's so dumb. I wrote a pilot about dads who pressure their sons when it comes to sports and had a bunch of people read it, and almost all the complaints were that the lead guy was "pretty unlikable." fukk that noise.
None of these characters were textbook good people in fact all three of them were a$$holes. All of the characters are older then me. People liked them. Don't confuse the recent trend of the villain protagonist with people liking characters who are a$$holes or had questionable morals.
Horrible, horrible logic.
Again, you're getting "interesting" mixed up with "likable".
People like Walt because he's a great character. He's interesting. People cheer for him to win for the same reason people didn't want Tony Soprano to die.
Does that mean you'd want either of them living next door to you? No. Why? Because they're unlikable.
Hell, more recently people in the "Jessica Jones" thread are over how great Kilgrave is. People like the character....despite the fact that he's a sociopath and a rapist.
It's 2015, it's ok to admit you like or cheer for characters that are horrible people.
And I'm at "nobody liked Pinkman". Most of the "BB" fanbase outside of The Coli loved him....for whatever reason. I don't understand it.
Fred.
Don Draper
exactly. It's james bond-ishWith Pinkman I felt kinda protective of him on the strength. I felt like he was the lil homie even though he got on my fukking nerves
Don is a piece of shyt but he's too swagged out to not like. I feel like the character has to be "unlikable" for the majority of the run...he can't just all of a sudden have a heel turn or become annoying. That shyt about Bella from Twilight is probably the most accurate description thus far...she was annoying from JUMP and was pretty much an after thought in regards to why people fukked with the series.
