I don't understand the MK writers. The end of MK 11 shows Liu Kang going back to meet the Great Kung Lao, and he literally tells the Great Kung Lao that he has been chosen as Liu Kang's champion.

Only for the Great Kung Lao to not even be in MK1 and Raiden is selected as the champion?

They did the same with MK11. Frost and Shao Khan counted as part of the base roster even though Shao Khan was a pre-order bonus and Frost was a DLC available at launch.
