It's just music. Seriously.

Music is a product, that in order to make money, must appeal the broadest common denominator. Before the age of piracy, certain niche genres like conscious rap, Jazz, the hardcore heavy metal genres, or adult contemporary could turn a profit because of sheer volume of the music sales market.

That's not possible now. Everything must sell a certain FIXED amount just to be profitable. Imagine the music market is a big pie with a very large "pop slice" and 100's of other smaller slices given to other genres. If every product has a certain FIXED sales volume in order to be profitable (not a pegged percentage) and that pie is shrinking on the order of 10 to 20% per year, then some of those slices are just going to be wiped out.

There isn't some nefarious objective going on here by anyone in government or industry. Whether you like it or not, the majority of people in the world don't like underground rap or conscious rap, in fact they find it to be boring.

OFWGKTA is cool, but will they ever have a youtube video with 200 million plus views like PSY, Lady gaga or Justin Bieber? No, they don't have that demographic appeal and neither does your favorite rapper. Deal with it.

:yeshrug:

Your opinion on average pertaining to Hip Hop music
has been pretty sh1t so I would expect a post like this from you.
oh and he's still factually wrong about platinum selling artists.
Chief Keef has yet to sell a record and contemporary artists with
similar styles to his have flopped miserably in comparison to Cole and Lupe.
I mean  @ Waka and Gucci's numbers.

I'm glad Lupe and Cole :win:'in out here.

THAT is the problem. Once upon a time, it wasn't 'just music'. It was almost a way of life and the beginning of a new sub-culture for us 'Black' people here in the US. We successfully combined various elements from many different 'Black' cultures throughout the world into a seamless, harmonic, rhythmic, colorful, exuberant, expressive form of living art.

'White' people got their hands on it.....the rest is history.

We went from 'teachers' to 'thugs & gangstas'. Our women went from Queens & Matriarchs to 'slores & trollops'.

'White' people don't want us to succeed unless they ALLOW us to on their terms for their amusement and profit.

Yeah sure. Once upon a time... just like every generation before you says. It was always somehow better in old and gold days.

Non-sense.

Gangsta rap was HUGE in the 90's. In terms of sales, the gangsta or thug rap genres significantly overshadowed other genres of hip-hop.

Somehow it's the fault of whites...sure...

I used to go to many underground concerts and the majority of the fans were ALWAYS white, and a large segment of artists in the conscious and underground scenes are white.

I grew up in the hood, and nobody listened to Conscious rap or anything like that. It was always guys like brotha lynch hung, Too-short, Spice 1, Mac Mall, Gangsta Dre, or something else that was full of negativity. That's what kids in the minority-dominated west coast ghettos listen to. I would play positive stuff sometimes, and most people weren't having it.

I've never been to many places in the United States, but I bet if you see some guy in a Big Box late 80's Chevrolet with big rims in the south...some guy from the hood, that guy ain't going to be playing conscious rap.

The decline of the black family and piss poor parenting (nikkaz be fathers) is the biggest reason IMO. Too many single moms raising our brothers. I know they do their best, but a woman cannot teach a man to be a man. You got all these effeminate ass nikkaz acting so emotional and shyt (women traits) and they lashing out tryin too hard to be thuggish. shyt is pathetic.

i don't think it's so much an issue of "white" or hip hop being "black" music. It's more an issue of money and hip hop no longer reflecting a culture of growth and reflection.

There's no argument in the world that can change the fact that when hip hop went commercial it became another tool for rich, mostly white, people to make more money peddling crap to poor people (notice i said poor because it does go beyond black and white and brown and yellow).

Rap isn't the problem, it is part of the problem though and if you fail to realize that then honestly you're part of the problem too.

you know i used to think this was a BS argument but more and more and more do i agree with the sentiment of this. There has been little work into the affect of males on children, especially boys, most the studies and such focus on a mother relationship. Which is sad.

Even with my own kids it's funny because sometimes i tell them shyt and my wife looks at me like i'm crazy, at the same time it made me start thinking wtf would they be learning if i wasn't here? On the flip side there are angles and such that my wife brings to the table in terms of teaching them (my boys especially) about shyt i wouldn't have thought too.

Exactly. My oldest son (4) thinks I'm "too mean" and tells my wife on me all the time, but he needs that stern force in his life. I make sure to always tell him why I'm being "mean" and that I love him. But yeah, I do wonder if I wasn't around, what would happen. You gotta be in these kids lives man as much as you can.

Yeah i hear you man. My daughter always runs to snitch on me:smile:
I laugh and tell her "go tell your momma, i'll tell her the same thing" My boys though I can see how NOT having a father in their lives would have the a bit softer on a lot of things. For instance when they get hurt i tell them to rub some dirt on it and keep it moving... :manny: I do teach them it's ok to cry too though...just for the right reasons (dog died).

Raising kids is a trip for sure.

I would say no because modern hiphoppers dont care about realness to the degree old school hiphoppers do. How many thug rappers are out there eating? Only Ross is eating and we know that he isnt gonna be out there thuging in the streets so its only a persona or alter ego. When Ti,Wayne and Gucci went to jail their careers suffered irreparable damage which tells you that people dont care whether guys lyrics are lived out despite what record companies try to push. Plus the most popular rapper of the moment is proud of being from a middle class background

So the view of hiphop from the OP is very dated.
