Wow just heard this song in the Tupac movie, so I decided to listen to the whole album and man this is straight fire. Those teenagers had a more mature album than most adult singers.
Damn I'm assuming you are under 30 yo? Yeah it was a good album crazy how Bobby V disappeared for years then had a huge comeback in 2005 lol.

As a kid I wasn't really feeling this song but as I got older and started to revisit some of the music my parents used to play,I Started being more appreciative of the music they played. This is a great song.

What was bad about it?
the jiggy era was upon us
things was lookin up
but they was singin this depressing sh!t
it was outta place for the time (maybe a little ahead of its time)
so they unsurprisingly didn't take off
like say immature, 112, or dru hill around that time
whose management knew better than to lead with such a depressing 1st single

Jiggy Era was for Rap, not R&B
1st of all the lines were beginning to be blurred between the genres
i'm just referring to the mentality of the young consumer of that time
cats was out here flossin/overstating their worth
but these blackberry molasses dudes was talking about how they ain't have sh!t and how they wasn't sh!t
basically singing about how bummy they was, it's no wonder that nobody was really fukkin with them like that
unfortunately they kept it too real (when keeping it real goes wrong)
Depression shyt... That was good for R&B( from 94-97) had some sad shyt that was dope.
"Depression shyt?" as in "my girl left me" babyface type shyt? sure that was in style at that time
but blackberry molasses was some Great Depression shyt
and i couldn't get jiggy with that sh!t, sorry
