Nah, the Vice President does matter and always has... only within the last two presidencies (2016 and 2020) have people downplayed the importance of the VP pick.

Although it doesn't happen as much you have to take into consideration that if something bad or strange happens to the actual President whether it be them getting sick/passing away, getting assassinated, having to resign because of scandal, etc the VP will be the sitting President and just because people voted for the President that doesn't they'll just accept anybody to sit in their place. People want the VP to be likable in the event they may have to step forward and take over.

That's why the sentiment around Trump picking Vance hasn't been thought of positively because a lot of the MAGA base isn't too sure about him, especially after learning more about JD's past. You need a ticket in which the President and VP are both likable to their bases. It can't be 50/50, 40/60, 30/70, whatever. It's gotta be very close in terms of likeability.
