High-Dough? High-No!: Weekend Box Office Results (Mar. 21-23)

High-Ho? High-Ho?

No.

It's off to flop we go.

Another Disney live action remake, another disappointing opening. This time it was $43M for Snow White. Not what the House of Mouse was expecting when they shelled out $270M to produce this latest entry in their not-so live action remakes.

We are just coming off a tremendous success story that was Mufasa: The Lion King, which had an even more disappointing $35.4M opening before legging its way to $253.8M. It'll take a miracle for Snow White to see those numbers. And she damn sure ain't seeing The Little Mermaid's $298.1M. Not with its pedestrian B+ CinemaScore. We'll see how long it takes to pass The Little Mermaid's $95.5M opening.

Now, I did have write-ups on the rest of the top five but it got deleted :francis: and I'm not redoing it.

I will say that Captain America: Brave New World has made $400.8M worldwide, which is good for the fifth worst in MCU history. It is, however, only $900K from overtaking the abysmal Eternals.

Notables

Jonathan Majors' Magazine Dreams was finally released in 815 theaters by Briarcliff Entertainment but could only manage $700K. :francis:

Robert De Niro's The Alto Knights only opened with $3.1M against a $45M budget.

Finally saw Black Bag, so good.

Even if they advertised this at MCU levels, it wasn't going to do well. Mike and Kate were great, so was Pierce and Bridgerton guy. But it was more of a Tinker Tailor type movie than James Bond.

Was Oppenheimer the last movie for adults to do well?

I would say there have been other adult skewing movies that have done well, at least relative to their budget. Nothing on the massive scale that Oppenheimer did, but a lot of factors went into that.

Kinda surprised that Black Bag had a decent hold, even if the opening numbers were small. Didn't drop as much as Novacaine did.

Snow White should at least be #1 for another week, unless the Unicorn movie or Jason Statham overperform next week.

A Man is Working While a Disney Princess Can't Make Ends Meet: Weekend Box Office Results (Mar. 28-30)

Better late than never but in a Stone Cold Stunner, Jason Statham's A Working Man was able to dethrone Snow White with $15.5M. That's only $1M off of what Statham's The Beekeeper opened with in January of last year. First quarter Statham is very consistent. :ehh: And after yesterday's ticket sales, its $16.79M running total is already more than Expendables 4's entire $16.7M domestic total. :wow:

smiling-levon-cade.gif

Snow White melted all the way down to $14.3M. That's a horror-like 66% drop. But on the bright side, its $66.9M is only $120M behind The Little Mermaid's $186.9M after 2 weekends in theaters. :picard:

Fathom Events is back with consistent earner, The Chosen. We have Easter coming up so they've released the first two episodes of season five as The Last Supper, which grossed $11.7M.

Fourth and fifth place was a battle between horror movies and it was a bloodbath with The Woman in the Yard's $9.3M slaughtering Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega's Death of a Unicorn's $5.7M. That's another disappointing opening for A24. Paul and Jenna couldn't even do Hugh Grant and Sophie Thatcher Heretic ($10.8M) numbers. :lolbron:

Saw Unicorn on monday.. Don't think ur missing much if you wait on it.

At least it's budget is low. I won't be surprised if the showings are down to one on the 9th. That and Opus were too by the numbers... and it sucks because I liked the casts in each. They really played it too safe

Minecraft is gonna take the weekend of course, so thats that for Snow.

Warner Bros. Mines Gold Ore and Crafts $162.7M of Gold Ingot with New Movie: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 4-6)

Last year Warner Bros saved the box office when they released Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. 53 weeks later and they have done it again With A Minecraft Movie's $162.7M opening more than doubling Godzilla x Kong: The The New Empire's $80M. It's the biggest opening ever for a movie based on a videogame, besting The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $146.3M. Now, after its first weekend, Mario had totaled $204.6M due to being released on the Wednesday before Easter. But there's no shame with $162.7M.

Let's not cry for Warner Bros. I mean, it's the 3rd biggest April weekend ever, behind Avengers: Endgame's $357.1M and Avengers: Infinity War's $257.6M. It's one of five WB movies to open with $160M+. It just squeaked past Barbie's $162M and trailing only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollow Part 2's $169.1M and Batman v Superman's $166M. :mjlol:

A billion plus is all but guaranteed as A Minecraft Movie has already totaled $323.3M worldwide. It was just funny reading the Deadline dude once again low balling the opening numbers. I remember a few weeks ago with this guy Anthony D'Alessandro saying it would be $50M after presales, then it went to $60M on April 2nd. Then it jumped to $80M after its $10.55M Thursday previews. But even that wasn't close. Then, on Friday, this dude could finally say it would be "north of $100M." Again, way off. On Saturday, he grew a scrotum and said it would make "135M+". But he wasn't done. On Sunday morning he bumped the projection to $145M. Now in his defense he did say don't be surprised if Warner Bros. calls it even higher, which is what happened. And the final Sunday estimate was $157M before it ballooned to $162.7M. I feel like this guy should have known better given the IP and how popular it is with how many copies it's sold. :manny:

Shout out to Jack Black. The Super Mario Bros. Movie and now A Minecraft Movie. Which "______________ Movie" will he conquer next?
