And to slightly pívot away from sports, it’s the same with our music. There was a plethora of musicians prior to the 90s.
This was a combination of two factors: their talent being honed in the church and schools offering different programs to teach music, as well as providing instruments.
Now look within the last 30 years… most of these ‘musicians’ don’t play any instruments or know the first thing about music theory. They’ve defunded so many school music programs, most music is made via Fruity Loops and the like.
And less people in the church meaning they’re not learning the science of singing: harmonies, runs, scales, vibrato. They’re learning it all from YouTube and they end up sounding trash on stage because they didn’t sing in a choir. Look at most singers today, and I guarantee most of them didn’t go to church.
Yes, we can say hip-hop culture has made generation X and onwards prefer using MPCs and turntables, but even producers from that generation still had an understanding of musicology. And I still consider rappers musicians.
But it’s a shame now seeing black bands, who all play instruments, are seen as anomalies when at one time it was the norm. Everyone knew someone who played bass, guitar, drums, keyboards, saxophone etc.
Seeing black folk like myself carrying our guitars seemed “alternative” back in the 2000s.
