Adrien Broner’s trainer: Title shot first, then Lucas Matthysse
September 9, 2014

Although three-division titleholder Adrien Broner called out THE RING’s No. 1-rated junior welterweight Lucas Matthysse after defeating Emmanuel Taylor on Saturday, Broner’s trainer, Mike Stafford, would rather his top fighter go for a 140-pound title first.

The 25-year-old Broner (29-1, 22 knockouts) scored a final-round knockdown during his 12-round unanimous decision victory over Taylor, accomplished at U.S. Bank Arena in Broner’s his native Cincinnati, Ohio. On the Broner-Taylor undercard, the 31-year-old Matthysse (36-3, 34 KOs) used a body shot to stop previously undefeated Roberto Ortiz in the second round.

“I would rather wait for a title shot before fighting Matthysse,” said Stafford of Matthysse, who, like Broner, is advised by Al Haymon. “Plus, Matthysse is with Al, so we’ve got plenty of time. Matthysse ain’t going nowhere, you know what I’m saying?”

Broner’s victory was his second consecutive junior welterweight victory since dropping a unanimous decision to Matthysse’s Argentine countryman Marcos Maidana that dethroned him as WBA welterweight beltholder last December.

Before facing Taylor, Broner was coming off a unanimous decision over Carlos Molina in a junior welterweight debut in support of Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s majority decision over Maidana in May.

The win over Taylor was impressive, given that the 23 year old had scored his biggest career win in July, rising from an eighth-round knockdown to unanimously decision Karim Mayfield. Taylor’s triumph over Mayfield helped helped him to bounce back from February’s unanimous decision loss to current WBO junior welterweight beltholder Chris Algieri, the man whose title Stafford wants Broner to take.

Algieri will first rise into the welterweight class, where he’s challenging WBO titleholder Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 22. An ideal scenario benefiting Stafford would be for Algieri to lose to Pacquiao, and then, return to 140 pounds for a defense against Broner.

“That could be something. That could happen,” said Stafford. “I think that once we get to next year, there are going to be a lot of changes made in boxing, so you really can’t say what will happen.”

Algieri is promoted by Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing, who has a working relationship with Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum. Stafford’s optimism stems from the fact that there has been a thaw in the adversarial relationship that has existed between Arum and Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya, who has served as Broner’s promoter.

“We just have to allow Golden Boy and Al Haymon do their thing,” said Stafford. “But I do think that it’s getting ready to be really interesting.”

On the other hand, Broner is unlikely to pursue either IBF beltholder Lamont Peterson, a long time friend with whom Broner often trains, or RING champion Danny Garcia, also the holder of the WBA and WBC belts. In addition, there have been rumblings of a potential unification bout between Peterson and Garcia, this, despite hints from Garcia that he is considering a rise into the welterweight division.

“Lamont might also be moving up and give up his title,” said Stafford of Peterson, who, like Garcia, is advised by Haymon. “But you just never know. We just have to wait it out, and we’re willing to do that. The doors will be opening up, I’m pretty sure, and we’ll have that title opportunity.”

Thats who his goofy ass should've been calling out instead of you know who... Now if Algeiri gets his ass whooped they'll look silly going after that belt which could likely be vacated

nah algieri lose or draw keeps the 140 title..if he wins I would imagine he will drop that title for the 147 belt

Yea I know that, I just forgot how recent his fight with Prov was.. he wont have too much longer to defend his strap after the Pac fight though.. Still not a good look going after a nikka coming off a loss (if CA loses :mjpls) even if he's still holding a strap

Broner is not supposed to call out lesser opponents...you always call out the big dogs in your weight division.

Calling out Matthysse shows that is who Broner wants to fight, the problem is that Matthysse wants to fight Danny Garcia, for the title or in a non-title bout. Either one, as long as he gets his hands on Garcia, because it's "personal" to him.

That leaves Broner in the position that, the person he called out is looking elsewhere...who can he fight? The only options will be Chris Algieri for the WBO Championship or Viktor Postol for the WBC Championship if Garcia decides to face Matthysse next.

If Garcia moves up in weight, that automatically makes Postol vs Matthysse for the WBC Championship. If Peterson moves up in weight, we can challenge for that belt as well against Cesar Cuenca for the vacant IBF Championship.

Those are our options.

Broner vs Matthysse, Broner vs Algieri for WBO belt, Broner vs Postol for WBC belt, or Broner vs Cuenca for IBF belt...but it all depends on Matthysse, Garcia, and Peterson. The only option that DOESNT have Matthysse/Garcia/Peterson involved is to go straight at Algieri which is what Stafford is suggesting.

It really doesnt matter, because "The Million Dollar Man" Adrien Broner beats em all anyways:smugbiden:

Not a good look for whom?:dahell:

If Algieri is a Champion in the 140 division, we cant help it if he's being dragged up to lose to the #2 fighter at the division above us.

He could stay at 140 and fight AB on November 22nd, but the money/fame/publicity is too good to pass up.

He shouldn't call out Algeiri, but he calls out Pac, then fights Algeiri's leftovers :mjlol:. I doubt AB could get pass Provodnikov to be honest unlike the lesser opponent Algeiri who beat prov :youngsabo:

Calling out Matthyssee is kind've silly to me since LM aint no champ.. AB should be calling out Swift, but he dont want it.. Algeiri should be the next nikka in line AB should be calling out. I agree with Stafford... but not if ALgeiri loses thats why I say its too late.. Honestly I believe Algeiri is gonna stay at 147 win or lose

You dont think Matthysse is better than Chris Algieri?:comeon::camby:

With a belt or without one, Matthysse is a tougher and better opponent....any fighter about something should call out the very best. And that's what AB is doing.

It's silly to you for AB to call out Matthysse at 140 who's ranked #1 by RING at 140, but it's NOT silly to you for Pacquiao to call out a 140 fighter, who's never fought at Welterweight, for a non-title bout at 144?:usure:

What I meant was, how is it silly for Broner to call out the RING #1 ranked fighter in the same division but it's not silly for Pacquiao to call out a boxer a division below, who's never fought at Welterweight, to a 144 catchweight? It's not even at 140 where Algieri is a champion:manny:

Algieri hasnt earned a shot at the Welterweight Championship...he's never even faced a Welterweight before. That's much more crazy to me, than Broner calling out Matthysse.

It would be like saying that Erislandy Lara was crazy for calling out Canelo Alvarez, but GGG isnt for calling out Demetrius Andrade for a 157 catchweight for GGG's title. And then the person also says that Lara should've been calling out Andrade over Alvarez because Andrade has a belt and Canelo doesnt:dahell:

:heh:
