Mike McCallum:

49-5-1
36 knockouts
Never knocked out

Didn't lose a bout until March, 1988 against Sumbu Kalambay (at the time McCallum was 33-0).
He won his next 10 fights, including payback against Kalambay in 1991.
He then fought to a draw with James Toney in December of 1991.
Beat Fermin Chirino.
Then lost the rematch to James Toney in 1992 via Majority Decision.

By then he was a few months shy of 36 year sold.
Moved up to Light Heavyweight for a few years before retiring in 1997.

Indeed. ALL boxers cherry picked (although I HATE that term, context is needed), Sugar’s resume is way better IMO than Marv’s.

McCallum had bad luck and bad timing. A great fighter without much box office appeal.

He was a Kronk fighter, training at the gym with Emanuel Steward, Thomas Hearns, etc...he was the mandatory for Roberto Duran’s WBA title at 154. Hearns was the WBC champ at 154. Duran was stripped of his WBA belt for not fighting McCallum, and fought Hearns for something like 10x what he would have made fighting McCallum.

Steward, obviously, was involved, since he was training Hearns. McCallum split with Steward after that and held a grudge. I think Steward’s response was :yeshrug: “Duran was never going to fight you when he could make so much money fighting Hearns instead....at least you get a title shot out of the belt Duran is vacating”. Duran was unlikely to beat McCallum if they had fought IMO.

Hearns beat Duran and then they started negotiating a Hagler fight at 160. A couple years later McCallum ended up beating Milton McCrory who was another Kronk fighter, so he sort of got his revenge. I think Steward was in McCory’s corner that night, I saw that many years ago.

Leonard was largely inactive after 1982. Leonard from 1979-82 is, IMO, one of the best fighters we’ve ever seen on film. I’m not too sure about him after that. He fought at 154 (Kevin Howard) around the same time the Duran/Hearns/McCallum thing was going on and he did not look good at all. He would had to have fought better than that if he fought McCallum.

McCallum did have sort of slow feet, kind of flat footed. Sumbu Kalambay was able to take advantage of this and use his elusiveness to outbox him pretty badly in their first fight. Leonard might be able to use the same game plan he did against Hagler and Duran 2/3 to beat McCallum. If it’s a close decision, then Ray would likely to get the benefit of the doubt.

I slightly favor Hearns over McCallum, and I think Hagler beats him. Sort of depends on the time frame, Hagler was noticably slower with his defensive reflexes and legs in his last couple of fights.
