Miguel Cotto: No Organization Owns My Career!
Posted by: Miguel Rivera on 2/26/2015 .

By Miguel Rivera

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) will not allow himself him to be pressured into a mandatory defense against Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29KOs), who owns the WBC's interim title at the weight and the WBA/IBO versions.

Golovkin returned last week in Monte Carlo, where he stopped the WBC's silver champion Martin Murray in the eleventh round of action.

The World Boxing Council is allowing Cotto to make a voluntary defense, but then they expect him to face Golovkin.

"No organization owns my career. So I will do my part and what I want to do," said Cotto in response to reporters who questioned him on the growing pressure from the WBC to face Golovkin.

Cotto expects to return in June. He says the upcoming opponent is undecided, although names like Timothy Bradley and Brandon Rios have been mentioned.

Come on man:comeon:

You can be a Boxer and a coward....I dont care what anyone says.

When you only fight people who you think you have a chance at beating, but avoid the ones you DONT think you can beat....all while calling yourself "The Best" or "Champion" in a particular division, you're a coward in my book:manny:

Miguel "Cowardly" Cotto:camby:

WBC: Cotto Must Face Golovkin After His Voluntary

In an earlier story on BoxingScene.com, WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) made a strong statement with respect to a pending obligation to make a mandatory defense against Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29KOs), who owns the WBC's interim title at the weight and the WBA/IBO versions.

Following Cotto's statement - Mauricio Sulaiman, President of the World Boxing Council, once again confirmed that his organization will allow Cotto to make a voluntary defense in June but then he (or the winner of the fight) has to face Golovkin.

“Miguel Cotto will have a voluntary defense. He will choose his opponent. But the winner will have to face Golovkin,” Sulaiman stressed.

Either defend the title, against a MIDDLEWEIGHT like you won it from and the division you're in, or give up the belt:ufdup:

At this point in Cotto's career with all of his fights & wars, I believe he's earned the right to pick whom he wants to fight. He's not under Arum anymore so he can make his own decisions

Not when you're the Champion and refusing to defend the belt against other challengers in the division:mjpls:

Either forfeit the belt or defend it against your division.

How can you be the "Lineal Middleweight Champion Of The World", but only want to defend it against Welterweights and Junior Middleweights?:wow:

He's earned that right to pick if he wants to defend or vacate fam. He only has a couple more years left if he's lucky till he retires. I'd rather he fight Canelo

Like I said to @patscorpio He's paid his dues to choose whether to vacate or not. He's trying to maximize his income before he retires. Can you blame him at this point? I'd be way more critical of him if he were for arguments sake in One Time's position trying to play that.
