The console market is stagnant, there's no growth in it. The bulk of "gamers" aren't even on consoles, that's who MS is after, and xCloud is their way to do it.

Don mattrick was the one who tanked the Xbox brand when the X1 was releasing as an always online console with a big focus on kinect and watching TV through the x1.

They fired mattrick and got Phil, who's done a great job of turning the brand around by getting rid of all the kinect bullshyt and focused on acquiring studios for more exclusives.

It would be a huge mistake replacing Phil Spencer because he seems like the only one at Microsoft that actually cares about gaming. Before he stepped up, Microsoft was trying to make Xbox a system for grandparents and children like the wii.

Game pass is profitable, just as other subscription services(Disney+, Netflix). They take a hit initially, and eventually start turning a profit.

Phil is getting a promotion and likely a new role made for him.

Xbox has grown and will now need someone to head upset the massively growing Xbox game studios, someone to focus solely on consoles, and someone to oversee the entire umbrella (likely Phil).

Pretty standard fare considering the growth. Or maybe Phil will take his riches and retire to just bei g a figurehead .

Either way this mean Microsoft plans to continue investing in and growing the gaming division.
