Both are taking their personal experiences and trying to make general statements about a whole gender.

The victim in this situation wanted a relationship. Why did he choose her? What did she tell him? What were his previous interactions with the children's father like? Only he can tell us and he's too busy fighting for his life in a hospital to speak on this.

Men will see this as a cautionary tale and refuse any and all single mothers while others will see this as an isolated incident because they themselves may have been raised by a step father and have a good relationship with their biological father. It is possible for this to happen.
