The H
I don't think Michael cared one way or the other. A big pillar for his character is that he's very calculated, and if he really felt that way, he wouldn't have gotten married in Italy. Becoming accepted was just a tactic to access more resources. If there was a reality check, it was that they would give him any and every excuse not to align with him, so he chose a different method.

He tells his father in the first one, I'm not a "Pezzonovante"....

I don't think he was ever disillusioned by the front....

he wasn't. This thread was erroneous.

The entire movie (Part 2) is about the loss of the family heritage and italian-ism.

  • It starts with a funeral in Corleone, and Vito's trip to ellis Island, and young Vito Andolini losing his name, and becoming Vito Corleone...the most italian thing ever
  • Then it cuts to young Anthony's christening, in lake tahoe, like the least italian place of all time, and Senator Geary calls him 'cor-lay-ohnee', and shyts on his family to his face
  • Here, you get the most italian person in the family since Clemenza died, Pentangelli. Pentangelli is speaking in Italian, hates how the Rizzoto brothers are disrespecting him and the neighborhood, and worse, the band in late tahoe can't even play italian music...they play POP GOES THE WEASEL :scust:
  • Then we see the beginning of Vito, how much he loves his family, a very Italian new york, watch a traditional italian musical, and vito asks Gensco "why does he do that to other italians?" - Don Fanucci is a predator of the italians in the neighborhood, and Vito despises it - this is what michael never appreciated.
  • After the assassination attempt, Michael immediately does not believe that it was Pentagelli; he KNOWS Frankie has a quarrel with him, but he also knows that Pentangelli is a super old school mobster ["he's a drunk old man"] and he knows that Frank would never betray the family over business [when he eventually agrees to testify, that is personal because of what the failed assassin in the movie says].
  • He resents the non italians in the family; specifically Kay (i'll get back to her), Fredo's sloppy ass wife, Merle, etc.
  • When Michael gets to Cuba, he has the one on one with Fredo (banana daiquiri). He suspects Fredo. Look at how he is absolutely examining Fredo
    1629fe1d4bcc16fe0f54c76c4ab4336802a4add9.gifv
  • He then hears Fredo say that him and Johnny Ola and 'old man Roth' hang out and clearly, Fredo betrayed him, and lied to his face multiple times. This is maybe only one of 3 times where Michael is legitimately HURT [when kay told him about the abortion, and the death of Mary Corleone are the other 2]. Fredo legit broke his heart.

why? NOT because he is betrayed...but because he just lost his brother. He has to kill him now. By the rules of la costra nostra he's gotta go. And it hurts Michael...Fredo was the only one who congratulated him when he joined the marines, and Fredo has a good heart...it is why that was the last memory/scene of the film.
  • Michael has the one on one with his mom where he straight up asks if it is possible to LOSE YOUR FAMILY. She says no with some good advice...he then green lights Fredo.
  • The single best acted scene in movie history; Michael's absolute heartbreak when Kay told him of the abortion. Because he wanted a son to continue growing the family, and she said "THIS MUST ALL END...THIS SCICILIAN THING...that has been going on for 2000 years"

He slapped the shyt out of her because of how disrespectful he found it...not the abortion itself...she is literally talking about ending his family heritage.
  • Then he welcomes Connie back into the family because it is all he has to hold on to what he has actually destroyed over time.

At absolutely no point did Michael Corleone want to be a WASPY type or take the family in that direction. He wanted the money to be clean or go into politics like his dad wanted, but he never wanted to to be anything but an italian family. He was just a corrupt SOB and he ruined the family along the way.

I gotta dissect all this but from briefly reading thru I agree with all your points especially the “it was an abortion” scene being the best acted scene of all time. Pacino’s acting with his eyes and lip quivering is GOAT shyt.

…shyt I even remember everything about the time of day, the weather, and exactly where I was when I first saw GF2 and that scene in particular.

Are you GF1 or GF2, if you had to choose between the two films?

I prefer 2 but obviously 1 is incredible and in my top 3.

I go back to 2 more often, and I think getting better performances out of Pacino, and Cazal , getting DeNiro, and Hyman Roth...i prefer 2

If i were to rank scenes however, my favorite scenes in trilogy history are

  1. It was an abortion
  2. They massacred my boy
  3. I was passed over
  4. The embrace of death / Michael ordering a hit on Fredo WHILE hugging him, at his mother's funeral :demonic:
  5. The Festival / killing of Fanucci
  6. I'm MOE GREEN [this might be top 3 next time I watch, i love Moe Green :heh:]
  7. Vito losing the Andolini name and the arrival at Ellis island
  8. Michael taking care of family business
  9. I believe in America
  10. Vincent becoming the new Don in 3 [slept on...IDGAF, Andy Garcia was truly doing his best in this film]
  11. Killing of Sollozzo and McCluskey
  12. Vito in hospital / Michael gets beat up
  13. Connie begging Michael to rejoin the family essentially
  14. Death of Sonny
  15. Senator Geary in Michael's office

For me it's everything from the scene with Carlo until the Al Neri closes the door on Kay

The first time I seen The Godfather, those last few scenes, more than anything else...left me like "HOLY shyt...MICHAEL IS A DEMON....I LOVE IT!!!!! :damn:"

- Tessio realizing that it was Game Over
- Micheal getting Carlo to slow walk himself into admitting the betrayal "You have to answer for Santino, Carlo..."
- Connie running into the house "READ THE PAPERS!! THAT'S YOUR HUSBAND!! THAT'S YOUR HUSBAND!!!"
- Kay watching Clemenza pay respect to the fukking DON as the door closes

Neck ties and boxing gloves.
Mike served in the United States military in World War II.

That is not the first time he's seen/dealt with predijuce. He fought against Hitler for fukks sake.

He may have been naive to the Mafia lifestyle initially because of his father's wishes but its not like he was some idealistic trust fund student who dodged the draft.

He left WW2 a captain. He had seen, lived, and witnessed more human behavior than probably anyone else in that family. That's probably also why he was so calculating and effective being a Don during war time.
