Prince simply isn't as memorable. Michael was a better singer and has more indelible songs in his catalog. Prince was interesting, but ultimately a hipster thing and his contribution to music less copious. Doesn't matter that he played his own instruments. We care about the songs, and MJ has Prince beat hands down in terms of how many good songs he put out.

It's just not true
First of all, it obviously matters if we're talking about who's a better artist/musician, that the guy who played and produced his own shyt was better than the guy who didn't. Prince was clearly better at the music craft.
But about 'contribution to music' Prince's music was more widely imitated back in the day when 80s used synths/drum machines to sound like Purple Rain, in the 1990s with neo-soul, D'angelo, etc., and it's more widely imitated now, most of the bedroom producers are ripping off Prince chords. Even Michael was hugely influenced by Prince, started going all androgynous in the mid-80s and shyt, 'Dangerous' is basically MJ does Prince.
Prince put out music his entire life and has vaults we'll never even get to hear, are you seriously gonna act like you're checking for MJ's shyt post-Bad?
