The crazy part is I questioned both of those hires. Cause Pop was a GM taking over for Bob Hill. But I didn't know Pop's coaching history with Larry Brown and stuff like that. Spo was a video guy which is crazy that he became head coach. But they both proved me wrong. I realized that in sports sometimes the out of box hires can be the best ones. Even in football- John Harbaugh's specialty was special teams. Sean MCVay was one of the youngest head coaches ever.Well deserved. Spo is the epitome of what a great coach is...season after season he does more with less than majority of the coaches in the league. People bringing up “championships” fail to realize that coaches aren't measured on how many rings they win but based on how much success (regular season and postseason) they obtain at a certain rate and circumstances.
This is a much better contract that makes sense compared to Monty's in Detroit because Spo actually has the prestige and the resume to warrant such a contract/extension. The only thing Monty has is two COTY awards but a lot of times those things don't tell the whole story when it comes to coaching.
You put Spo in Detroit and the Pistons very much likely would've never went on a near 30 game losing streak but if you put Monty in Miami and the Heat wouldn't have had as much success they've had within these past 5 years.
Spo is similar to Pop in San Antonio in that they've both have given their respective franchises great success and in return the organization is forever loyal to them.
